I voted for Billy Hamilton because of his stolen bases but you also can't forget that to get all those stolen bases he had to get on base a lot. he Had a .410 OBP which is also impressive.

I get that you guys are impressed with Hamiltons record, but there is ZERO chance he wins this award. Myers........and its not even close.

I get that you are impressed with Myers, but what significant thing did he do that hasn't been done ever. I'm not a mathematician, but I'm willing to bet that ZERO chance is a tad off...and that is not even close.

Taveras' 2012 numbers, month by month.

It should also be noted he never went more than 3 consecutive games without a hit this entire year (which occurred only once - from 7/28 through 7/30).

Wil Myers.

billy hamilton had an amazing season but Wil Myers was the better player.

Define better player....I've tried to create (heck it could exist, just haven't seen it) a better STAT category that I feel shows how valuable a table setter like Hamilton is. He steals bases, draws more walks and essentially gives players like Myers inflated stats. If you take the antiquated Total Base stat and add Walks, HBP, and Stolen Bases, you get a much clearer picture of total bases earned.

Using the old formula the numbers look like this.
Wil Total Bases=313
BH Total Bases=215
Making you believe that Myers was on base more often.

But take a closer look at the numbers. If you were to add actual bases to that total, Hamilton flys by Myers.

TB+BB+HBP+SB= total bases+

Wil TotalBases+=384
BH TotalBases+=458

The updated stat shows how many more times Hamilton could have been driven in by a player like Myers. Something that is increasing in value to MLB clubs. Myers is a deserving MVP, but it's about time people take notice of something other than HR/RBI/AVG.

Yep, agree...

Also, many overlook the intangables a threat like Hamilton offers in the way of opposition. The moment he steps to the plate, and every second he is on the base path, changes the dynamics of an entire offense.

It's interesting to note: Rickey Henderson's minor league (80.6% success rate) and major league (80.5% success rate) rate(s) of success in stealing bases is identical to Billy Hamilton's success rate in the minors to date: 80.5%.

Voted Bundy

I thought Taveras at first, mainly based on Jaypers logic.. but Bundy is about the equivalent of that and when I have to chose between a pitcher playing well at that age and hitter playing well at the same age.. I'll go with the pitcher.

I like your chrome cards.

well, the baseball writers agreed with me. Any smart baseball fan would also agree with me that Myers had the best overall season of any player in milb. That is the point of the thread, and I answered as such. That is the only point. If you were betting that ZERO chance was a tad off, you would lose, as evidenced by the fact that he won in a landslide. Get a clue. Learn how to honestly compare players instead of bashing me for stating the obvious.

what on earth are you on about? Look at the overall numbers of each player - the STATS. Myers wins, and its not even close. Hamilton can steal, awesome. Myers destroys him in almost all the other catagories. lol jbhoffman.

Runs-Billy +14
H- Myers +5
2B- Myers +4
3B- Billy +8
HR- Myers +35
RBI- Myers +64
SB- Hamilton +149
SO- Hamilton -27
BA- Myers +3
OBP- Hamilton +23
SLG- Myers +.180
OPS- Myers +.157

I even did the work for you Greg. If you read the BA article and all of the posts, you would understand that they are two different types of players. Myers is meant to knock in Hamilton types. Hamilton types are meant to pad the stats of Myers types. I stated that Myers was deserving but thought Hamilton had a historic enough season to take the title. I'm still looking at the STATS and seeing that in several categories they were very close. In several, they blew each other away. In my opinion you can't just look at power stats anymore. You must think when determining the value of a player. If you can't think why Hamilton was valuable, then this discussion isn't for you.
