For as long as i have been collecting, no one has come in with as much hobby hype as...

Its actually tough to compare guys who came up more than several years ago against the more current players - at least in terms of baseball cards. We know SO much more about minor league guys today. While back then there may have been 1 or 2 "can't miss" prospects every single year, it seems like there are 5-10 "can't miss" guys every year today. Its just easier to remember the older guys because, well, there were only one or two of them. Its tougher to remember the more current guys because they share to spotlight with half a dozen other guys.

It just fun to look at card values of all prospects over the years. I wonder which prospect's cards lost the most value (percentage wise?) all-time.

From my collecting prospectives no one was more hyped than J.D. Drew and Rick Ankiel. There cards went through the freakin' roof when they were hot.

Mark Prior was the bionic pitcher, assembled by scouts/scientists in a dungeon somewhere, who dominated at every level.

Except in the majors where it counted.

Honestly I would have to say Barry Bonds. The son of Bobby Bonds and the Godson to Willie the "greatest player ever" Mays. There was crazy hype about him coming out of High School let alone college. A close second would be Griffey.

I agree that Van Popel wins hands down for pitcher.

Mark Prior - Booo USC!!!

Gregg Jefferies
Ben Grieve - You know what I'm talking about A's fans. Remember that 1995 Bowman' Best Refractor that cost you $150!?!?! :)

Yep, a perfect pitcher with so-called "flawless" mechanics.
Way to go, Dusty!

I don't remember how much hobby hype he had, but this was an epic fail.

All time, I think it would be a toss-up between him and Grieve for hitters, and Van Poppel & Taylor for pitching.

Walton and Dwight Smith pumped the heck out of '89 UD Hi #s, as did Todd Zeile

I think Kyle Blanks is darn near 300 lbs- that dude is BIG.

Also, Prince Fielder was quite rotund as well.

Pitching wise, it's pretty tough to be an obese pitcher- Randy Johnson was pretty tall, but skinny, but I guess the height makes up for it, he's still pretty big.

I forgot about Wells! :D That guy was never a prospect, but he sure was BIG.

I think that Prior could have been one of the five dominant pitchers of our generation.

Really? Before the flukey injuries he posted a pretty impressive rookie year as a 21 year old. Then in his first full season he went 211.3 IP, K'd 245, BB'd only 50, had a 2.43 ERA, was an All-Star, finished 3rd for the Cy Young and 9th for MVP. Even in the following two seasons when he never seemed fully healthy, he K'd over a batter per inning, didn't BB many, and had ERA's of 4.02 and 3.67. That's the saddest thing about Prior, he DIDN'T dissapoint, he was living upto his hype, but got taken down by flukey injuries, and eventually arm problems.

A recent player would be Brandon Wood.
