Older Orioles fans will remember Lenn Sakata. He used to live in the central California town I grew up in. I met him in the early 80s at a local show - I think it was at the Veteran's Building.

Baseball card fans will remember his spectacles

Bob Gibson I was working at sears and sold him a fridge and oven right after high school.

I have seen him several times over the years including at a urinal in the Walmart. He is always friendly and polite not the gruff dude you hear he is.

Did you get a looooooooong look at him? You know what they say....you never go back....

I went to the QB challenge withy father in 1992 and got to meet Steve Young and have my 49ers hat signed. I nearly tripped in front of him and he made a comment how that was pretty funny, I was too star struck to be embarrassed. I really enjoyed the QB challenge setup in Orlando in the 1990s. They would hold the competition on the golf course of disney. There would be 2 hours for autographs before the event and every QB in the event would sign. You could usually get 2 to 3 autos before the event. And it was all included in the price of the ticket.

Darcy Rota- player for the Canucks.
The now defunct Woodwards had a book signing for the Canucks new cookbook (early 80's). Several players signed but the only one I remember was Rota since he was pretty popular at the time.

When I was about 1 or 2, I met Muhammed Ali. My parents and I were in a hotel in the DC area if I recall the story correctly, and Ali was there. My Dad must have told me to go up and say hello and he picked me up, autographed my Gingerbread Man book and then handed me a banana.

When i was about 7, my dads Kiwanis was doing a fundraiser for needy families and Jumbo Elliott was one of the local celebs their to help fundraise. I remember when my dad told him i was 7, his mouth gaped open because of my size. I was a huge kid and he told me i needed to play football and i would be a giant by the time i reached highschool. The whole time i just stood there and said yes sir, yes sir. He was huge!

Cecil Fielder at a card show in Atlantic City. Had to be about 1988-1989. I remember he was really cool. I was pretty shy and star struck, but all in all, a good experience.

Glenn Hubbard in 1986 or 1987. He was at a local bowling alley for some event and signed my 86 Topps card of his. The Braves used to have some sort of charity fundraiser at the bowling alley every year where participants could pay to bowl with them so I met a lot of them during those years since my dad helped run the event.

read the thread title too quickly and thought it said "Who was the first pro athlete you met in prison?"

if it's while they were a pro, probably mike lieberthal, when he was catching in the minor leagues. most recent one was evander holyfield at a thrashers playoff game, he was leaving & walked in front of my wife & i on our way out, bumped into her, and stopped to apologize. had a cosby sweater on with a black leather hat like it was the early 90's still.

Growing up in Hawaii you don't meet many of these... so sumo wrestler Konishiki would be the closest. Since than I met Pete Rose just this January and my pastor's husband is former WWF superstar Iron Mike Sharpe (unconfirmed as he either used an assumed last name than or changed it since... but he looks like him and his wife calls him Iron Mike AND they both lived in NJ at one time :x it's a bit of a stretch but I'm 89% sure it's him) if that counts.

Steve Carlson, former NHLer and starred as a Hanson brother in Slap Shot. He taught me how to ice skate.

At around the same time, also Scott Gordon, NHLer and future NHL head coach, as well as a few other guys on the local ECHL team that got called up.

I met Roger Clemens in 1986..charged $30 for an autograph.. me and my brother got the auto's while my dad took pics, and Roger saw my dad taking pics and he snapped "who are you, what are you doing"..my dad replied that we were his kids and he was taking some pictures.. Roger then said "come closer and get a good angle" and smiled..he was ticked off at first, and after that, he was super nice.
