Technically they would have to be tone mapped images. And I'm not sure any of the companies would be interested in spending the time to do the tone mapping just for some cool pictures on some pieces of cardboard.

There are times, many in fact, when I'd rather see something like this rather than GU/autos. I've said it many times, but I would love to see HD or Gold Label make a comeback.

I don't disagree with the comeback of HD or Gold Label being awesome. That's why I voted for Topps in the poll here. I think if anyone would invest the time or money into something like this it would be Topps.

I think a properly tone mapped image printed on old Dufex would look amazing. I actually have a couple of pictures that I've shot in "HDR" then tone mapped. I had them printed on metallic paper and it instantly reminded me of an old Pinnacle baseball card.

That looks like after-shoot HDR. True HDR requires the picture to be taken 3 times. One in low exposure, one in regular exposure and one in high exposure. They look a little bit more natural (IMO) than that truck.

Here are some that I actually did myself (after-shooting). All photos shot by me:

a southern Panamanian beach. I edited people out of it, too:

a Panamanian abandoned store out in the middle of nowhere:

the backside of a local army camp. near a recreational section:

my truck (that i traded in on a better MPG car :( ):

This truck shot is a true HDR that was tone mapped with Photomatix Pro 3.1. It is a combination of 3 images; one underexposed, one normal exposure and one overexposed.

HDR is achieved by capturing a series of bracketed shots. Three would be the minimum number of shots required for a true HDR image. I have heard of guys using 5 or even 9 bracketed shots to make an HDR image. Typical computer monitors cannot see true HDR images unless they are tone mapped. Same goes for printing a true HDR image...it can't be done.

Regardless. Images like these would definitely look good on some Dufex! :D

Yah, as someone mentioned, you've basically got to use exposure bracketing on an INSANELY FAST lens to get HDR.

If you're taking pictures of something standing still and not moving, this isn't a problem, any joe schmoe can do it. In baseball though, things move, or so i've heard. Taking 3 pictures at 3 different stops is just the beginning....Odds are you'll want to nail down 5, maybe even 7 stops.

Stuff doesn't look bad when you use an array and tone map the background, while using a single.. maybe two.. images of the player up front, but that takes a lot of time.

When stuff's standing still, you can basically throw it into a program and you're good to go -- it'll do almost all the work for you.

So yah, you know how OPC had pictures of all the stadiums this year? That'd be awesome if done in HDR! The sun setting over wrigley or dodger stadium is absolutely gorgeous and I'd definitely spend 2 or 3 bucks per card if they did that.

A 50 dollar set of every stadium shot in gorgeous HDR would be absolutely awesome. It's pretty clear that Topps pays Photographers pretty poorly, though. I doubt I'd do this. Topps baseball photography, especially in flagship, is by far the worst in the business -- save, 1 in 4 pictures, maybe.

I hope none. I wish the HDR fad will end soon. I thought it looked kind of cool the first time I saw it, but now it is boring.

I know 0 about photography besides a: I like it or b: I don't like it.

Looking at some HDR it appears that the colors are more vivid than real life. Not that I don't like it but it's almost hyper-real.

Nothing boring about any of this HDR:

But most of those feature pretty solid photographic techniques as well.

A lot of photographers get sorta pissy about HDR because any idiot can set their camera to bracket exposures and throw it into photoshop and call it a day, without any variety of skill or technique.

I can understand where he's coming from.

Thank you. I mean anything can be cool if done well. I like some HDR images. I just feel it is overdone.

Reminds me of the B&W photos with an object in color. Those were ok at first but man, that technique is way overdone.
