This was in the paper today. I forgot who was interviewed (I think scouts, if not, then players or something). 12-0 in favor of Hughes was the verdict.

Hughes :) especially after today.

Even after giving up 5 ER to one of the best teams in baseball, Pelfrey's ERA is still nearly a half a run better than Hughes on the season. I would take Hughes as well, but I feel that he is being short-changed in this poll.

Comparing an ERA from a pitcher in the NL East to a pitcher in the AL East is laughable at best.

Ok.

Hughes ERA+: 132 (32% better than the league average)

I feel like people are still voting, so I'll vote again. hughes 365 days a year. he does everything better than Pelfrey at a younger age in a division that is 53295032582308 times harder to pitch in. Hughes is a future number for the best and most popular team in baseball, i am shocked his cards are still affordable.

Comparing ERA across leagues is irrelevant, whether it is raw or normalized. Coming into today:

Hughes -

FIP - 2.91
WAR - 2.2
K/9 - 8.84
BB/9 - 2.63
AVG - .229
WHIP - 1.13

Pelfrey -

FIP - 3.29
WAR - 1.9
K/9 - 6.13
BB/9 - 3.29
AVG - .235
WHIP - 1.22

It's not really even close.

How is it irrelevant? In the NL, Pelfrey's ERA is 70 percent better than the average. In the AL, Hughes ERA is 32 percent better than the average. Unless I am completely misinterpreting the stats (which could be), Pelfrey has a more impressive ERA. Regardless, I am just excited to watch both continue to improve.
