Just stopping by from the baseball boards. Anyone watching the Dolphins game might remember this.

The announcers were talking about the success of the Wildcat offense in today's game when one mentioned how last season around 8% of the Dolphins plays were of the Wildcat variety, while they gained 10% of their yards on those plays. He ended off by saying something like, "the 2% difference may not really be worth the focus it gets," basically saying that while in the game the Wildcat offense has been doing well, overall it may be a bit overrated.

While this might not seem to be unreasonable, a closer look at the numbers shows how a better understanding of basic math might have helped avoid a pretty silly statement..

Assume a team had 100 plays, during which they gained 1000 yards.

If a team picked up 10% of their yards on 8% of their plays, they would have picked up 100 yards on 8 plays or averaged 12.5 yards a play.

With the remaining 92 plays, they'll have gained 900 yards or 9.78 yards per play.

The difference in the average yards per play is over 27%, a very significant amount.

Not sure why this is at all important, but I felt it worthy of posting for some reason. Carry on with whatever you were doing before.
