Why arent Umps fined/suspended for touching players?

I have noticed this mostly in basketball, but if a player touches a ref its an automatic ejection and usually a suspension/fine. Yet refs are allowed to basically push and pull players at will. Recently there was an issue in the NBA playoffs that I feel was fueled by a ref pushing a player. Segway into last night and Magglio basically taking exception to the ump touching him. Now if Leyland came out and bumped the ump during his argument, he would be gone for a few games. Why is this allowed?

I was watching the game and the umpire will definitely be fined if not suspended. It just won't be publicized. What he did went past touching to pushing and was totally uncalled for. Leyland's reaction was classic. I think I read his lips saying "Don't *(&* touch my player!" multiple times.

I actually don't see the big deal. I think the ump was trying to tell Maggs to go to the dugout, like "I don't want to have to throw you out dude."

It shouldn't be a big deal, but its part of a double standard. Jerry Manuel, as much as I dislike the guy, got the shaft about a week ago for his cap bill touching an umpires cap bill. He was suspended and fined for cap bill contact. If a manager or player can get suspended for contact, then an umpire better get the same treatment.

No reason to suspend the ump. He didn't shove, push or show any intent to harm. So he put his hand on a players back as to say, move a long, this is not worth getting tossed. Players as well as coaches are way to dramatic. I think a rule change saying umps can punch a coach in the nose if he gets in an umps face would be interesting and if a player argues said player can be punched as well. Some of these players and coaches really need to realize they are playing a GAME.

As someone pointed out earlier. A manager accidently touches an Ump with the bill of his hat and he gets a suspension/fine. What is the difference? Outside of a double standard.

I disagree. If you saw the game live, with all the replays, it was a fairly strong push. Definitely no harm intended, but it was clear the ump wanted to hear none of Magglio's argument and wanted to push him away.

I haven't seen anything about Joey Crawford getting fined for shoving Antonie Wright last night, but I agree MLB umps love provoking things and getting physical.

Alex,

I am with you dude... it was an aggressive push, now I don't think a suspension is called for BUT the same should go for Managers/Players if they touch the ump slightly or when the Manager comes running out towards the ump and bumps stomach to stomach LOL I don't think it should be a suspension either.

Like someone above said... it's a double standard.

He did it to Artest a week ago as well. Crawford is the biggest offender in the NBA.
