Why do companies seem to think making a card thicker makes them "high end"?

The thing that makes the thick cards annoying isn't so much the thickness, but the lack of a standard to the thickness. If there was a standard people would know what to buy for protection.

For some reason everyone conforms to the unsaid standard for the height and width for the most part.

Who was the company that was advertising that they had the thickest card ever? Or maybe it was the thickest die-cut? Either way the thickness of their cards was a selling point for the product.

I remember Fleer used to tout the thickness of their premium Flair cards in magazine ads starting in '93 when Flair hit.

That was me! I've now rethought the position.
