Why have Topps Black/Copper low #'d cards fallen in sales?

These things used to sell like hot cakes a couple years ago. I remember pulling a AL wins leader card out of 06 Updates and selling it for $60. Now stars like Chase Utley and Teixeira are only going for $2-3...

Because player/set collectors buy them immediatly upon release and don't want two copies.

my guess would be that less people are trying to put the sets together for whatever reason.

I sold my black Derek Lowe twice ($1-3 sales) thinking set collectors would need it, got paid neither time due to 'no longer a registered user', so i gave up.

I picked up my Carlos Pena for a whopping .99$ and 2.49$ shipping..I have noticed the regular issue Topps Blacks selling low, but the Topps Heritage Blacks are still selling strong

Topps has done this set for six years. At first it was a fun challenge to put together for set collectors, but now the market is just oversaturated and most of the interest is gone. Kind of the same as many of the A&G shortprinted parallels are going.

These actually do sell very well, but only for a week or so after the release. The set builders still go crazy for them. I actually sell the majority of mine to a few buyers off of eBay each release. They always pay up for them as well. After they are done buying the prices drop like ******* on prom night.

I have a feeling they will increase in popularity again as time goes on. The only thing I don't like about them is that they're hobby only.

The other thing is that each year its print run increases by one, so this year there are eight (?) more serial #d sets than 2001 when they first appeared.

2003 was the first year.

The tough part, for player collectors, is the waiting game. Seeing my guy (Erstad) go for $25-40 (seriously, he's a common) upon release makes me wait. But waiting too long means I might not snag one for a long while. I'm still missing a few from past years.
