Why is MLB, NFL, etc. getting rid of UD and Topps?

Why do the major sports leagues want there to be exclusive contracts with card companies?
Topps is exclusive with baseball.
UD and Panini exclusive in basketball.
Topps just lost its NFL Players Inc. deal.
What's the reason for companies being shut out of certain sports?
Isn't competition good?
And don't the leagues/associations want more money?

Yes, they probably are pretty hefty contracts.

I can't even imagine what EA paid for the exclusive NFL contract for video games, and same thing for 2K and MLB.

It is ridiculous, because competition IS good.

But I don't think the MLB or NFL or NBA or NHL care about the quality of the cards...they just want their money.

And have been pretty successful about it also. But then again, so has the non-licensed products in the NHL line.

The exclusive deals must really pay. I can't believe that it would be more than licensing to 3 companies. Unless the thought from the leagues prospective is that they have seen many companies die over the last 10 years, and didn't want to take the chance one remains at the old cost of licensing.

Hockey's was $25 million over 5 years. The NBA's was more than that.

Cards for any specific sport are an established market, and a manufacturer is willing to pay a premium to be the only one to supply them. Kind of like going to a Coke school or a Pepsi school.

While competition CAN be good, too many choices can be bad, particularly if most of the choices are substandard or unnecessary to begin with.
