Vlad never got the attention he deserved when he was in his prime and did play a full time position.
He doesn't speak the greatest English, He doesn't have a lot of charisma, he's meek. He played on expos most of his career.
He has little playoff experience. These are all reasons he never got much recognition.
If he didn't get the recognition he should have got when he was one of the ALL TIME GREATEST players, it's definetely not going
to change with age. He will go down as one of the top 50 players of all time though, and as the only player to hit 300+ and 25+HR for 13 consecutive seasons along side of Lou Gehrig. There is no denying the greatness he brought to the game!

Vlad simply wants a multi-year offer at quite a bit more than other guys in similar situations are getting right now. The Angels offered him a 2 year deal at $10 mil and he rejected it, which probably wasn't the smartest of moves. He will eventually sign on with someone, and he will go on to have a great year for them, as he has been working his butt off to get back to the 01-05 Vlad we all remember. He wants to, and I think will get to the 500 HR mark, it is just a matter of finding a team that needs a DH at this point.

what he said.

some of you guys better check the stats before going off, he played 1/2 the year last year because of injury and had a great playoffs, eliminate last year (if you doubled his games played he would have had a fine year) and show me a season where he "sucked". Both the Expos and Angels were told he was one year older (gasp!) than he was originally listed when he signed his big Expos deal and when he signed his Angels contract. He isn't what he once was in the field true, but he can hit like a mad man and a DH on a team like Texas (the ball likes the fly there as well) would be a perfect fit. I think he's going to turn some heads this year, and by seasons end I will love to compare #'s with Matsui's.

I didn't realize that my a person's opinion could be "false".

I'd love to have seen the Sox sign him to play left instead of Cameron. He may not be what he once was, but he's gotta be better than what we got out of Manny in the field.

False. Mike Cameron is one of the most underrated players in the game. Terrific defender, draws walks, hits for power. Sadly to say, because i loved watching him play when he was in his prime, but Vlad is done as an upper echelon player. As a Dh, which is all he is now, he just isnt a good enough hitter any more to be worth a decent contract. He'll sign up somewhere and put up okay numbers, but will be overrated by his batting average. Hopefully he can regain some health and improve, take some more walks and hit for more power. A .300 batting average is pretty worthless if the guy isnt drawing walks (which Chone Figgins does, which is why he is so good) or doesnt hit for a ton of power (I dont think his body will recover enough to do so).

What Vlad did 2+ years ago doesn't matter. I know it's a novel concept that some (most) here don't understand, but the fact of the matter is he simply isn't a great player anymore and will want much more money than he is actually worth. Perhaps he can rejuvinate his career if he catches on as DH somewhere and gets in great shape but he isn't getting any younger and is on the decline. The trend in MLB is crystal clear, teams are going with youth and are phasing out overpayed, has been sluggers with negative defensive value like Vlad. Name recognition is all he really has going for him right now. Right now he's an average DH in the AL, nowhere close to the superstar he once was. Teams aren't dropping the money on those guys like they used to. I really doubt he gets more than the 2/10mil offer the Angels offered earlier.

I loved vlad. He always looked like he ran like an old man though. I predicted he would break down quick and he has. That being said he should still be a DH on a big market team. He wont be worth the money he gets but i want to see him hit for a couple more years.

the reason the angels passed on vladdy is he is said to be looking for a 2 year deal. i would have loved to have had him back but not for 2 years as he has become an injury risk the last few seasons.

I would still take Vlad over Eric Byrnes / Conor Jackson / whatever other OF the DBacks find from the depths of free agent hell to play everyday OF... even being the way he is.

He may not be the Vlad of old, but he is still an upgrade over what most teams have now.

Angels offered him two, he wanted three.

Does anyone here know that Guererro literally has one leg shorter than the other? Little known fact.

As a child his play revolved around a game called la placa (license plate), in which the hitter had to keep his bat on the placa until after the pitcher released the ball. That taught Guerrero how to hit low pitches. Guerrero bats without wearing batting gloves, a custom rarely seen in modern baseball. In an interview with Yahoo! Sports, he attributed this to helping his grandfather pull cows home barehanded as a young boy in the Dominican Republic.

I also spoke with a friend of his and was told that he loves playing video games, and is a real "momma's boy".

Great article, worth the read
