Why would a bidder bid bid ending in a "9?"

Noticed that an item I am selling has a ton of bids and noticed that one guy bid many times. Not so unusual by itself, but it the bidder bid numbers that ended up in "9" (like $99, etc.) which makes no sense if you are trying to win an auction. A little concerned that it looks like shill bidding, which of course it is not...

Any explanation why someone would bid ending in a "9" if they were trying to win a listing?

Edit: Not sure I was clear, I am not talking about the cents digit, but the dollars one. Bids of $479, $489 and $499 just don't seem to make any sense to me.

I will bid something like $16.59 for example...it isn't something to worry about.

I end everything in .79

No idea why, just got in a habit doing it one day.

I bid oddball too. I don't think what you're describing will look like shill biding.

Not sure whether people are actually reading the issue. I too bid with an interesting number of cents, but why would someone bid $499 on an item?

They are bidding what they want to bid whether it's cents or dollars... Who cares what we bid or what our patterns are..

Once people find out your pattern.. then you could lose auctions because of members knowing your history..

Mine used to be 11 (edgar) until I saw someone was bidding 12 and I was losing auctions..

Now I just put my snipe in and forget it..

I think everyone's just describing though own idiosyncratic behavior....And such a thing isn't just relegated to cents, and be it cents or the final dollar there's no difference.....It's not uncommon for people to do this.

The "9" would actually seem the most logical to me as well. Bidding up with the 9 at the end each time basically keeps you ahead until someone takes it to the next level, i.e. - The next ten dollar increment, or hundred, whatever.....To me it's tough to see why that would even be suspicious.

Could be. I've never seen it before outside of obvious shilling and my concern was that a high bidder might retract a bid due to shilling since following his bid the same guy bid: $407, $17, $427, $437, $447, $457, $468, $479, $489, $499
