Does the Razor contract prohibit Topps from offering a Wieters card this week? I assume it does, but I think eTopps has some flexibility due to its digital nature, maybe not though. Any Razor experts/insiders know for sure?

Wieters would be guaranteed money if etopps could produce a card and then later 100 autos or so.

Tristar can do that because they have a Minor League baseball license.

If topps does create an eTopps Wieters.... it will be /1499 I bet... and they usually say the cards arent available to ship until like 4 months later.... this one... they can say it wont be available until 2010.

Since it is a digital card... and not a live card.... and likely only 1500 exist..... this could be a HUGE card for a year until his real cards come out.

Topps would have to sign Wieters to a contract, and per Razor's agreement with him, he cannot. Unlike Upper Deck, Topps signs players to individual contracts.

Therefore, the earliest to expect a Wieters Topps card is 2010, unless Razor works with Topps to allow them to pay for his rights.

That's my understanding.

If he signs with the MLBPA couldnt they offer up a digital card? Its only digital.... not an actual card until it is printed.

Topps does not operate directly with the MLBPA, they would have to sign Wieters to a contract, and he cannot sign with a company without Razor's permission/consent.

It has nothing to do with digital or not, even though it will be tangible card, and is sold as such.

I don't think the "digital" thing really matters. You're not buying a digital card, you're buying the rights to an actual card. In the case of a new card, it's not printed yet, but it is still the rights to the card being manufactured.

Wow... So if ETopps can do this with Wieters, what is stopping them from doing so with other prospect's (does it have to do with a stipulation that by Wieters reaching the "big's" ETopps can create a digital likeness of him)?

If TriStar can make Wieters cards while he is under contract with Razor, why couldn't Topps and Upper Deck?

Because TriStar has a minor league license.

To try and simplify this Upper Deck can make base cards because they have a blanket deal with the MLBPA.Topps can't make any cards because the have to sign each player to an individual contract. This is why they were able to have Bonds cards and Upper Deck couldn't.
