Interesting thought. With a knuckler you really don't need a second pitch if, and it's a big if, you can throw it consistently for strikes. A Charlie Hough-style 60-65 mph knuckler could be effective.

You need more than one pitch to play in the MLB and at 60 mph...the fast ball just isn't going to cut it. My wife could hit that.

Tell that to Tim Wakefield.

Come to think of it, a knuckleballer is precisely the way a woman could crack the majors.

There is no way a woman will ever play in the MLB unless it is a publicity stunt by a bad owner with a bad team. I feel that any "sport" that a woman can compete with men is not a sport at all. Men are so far superior to women physically! If a woman can compete, then it is an activity and not a sport. NASCAR, not a sport, nor are the drivers athletes. A woman will play in the mens PGA someday because golf is not a sport, nor are golfers athletes. Not saying golfers and race car drivers are not skilled, just saying they are not athletes. Same goes for darts, billiards, poker, etc. I know a woman played minor league hockey as a goalie, but we see how far that went. I am sure someone will bring up a woman as a Kicker in football, but a kicker is not an athlete.

While Wake doesn't have another real Major League pitch, his FB hits 75 and can top out in the low 80's. That is enough to keep major league hitters on their toes. If all you can throw is a knuckle ball, and your fastball isn't somewhat faster, batters will tee off on you. The perception that you can get something other than the knuckleball is what makes it effective

Hitters aren't on their toes because they might get a fastball. Wakefield throws his knuckler over 83% of the time. Hitters are sitting on it virtually every pitch. It's the unpredictability of what will happen with the knuckler that makes it effective. Same went for Hough. He threw his approx. 90% of the time.

Wow, you just came up with the dumbest and the most ignorant thing I've read on these boards. That's a tough feat. Congrats.

In general, I would agree that if a pitcher throws one-pitch that the pitcher will eventually get hit and hit hard. But there are very notable exceptions. Everyone knows Mo is throwing a cutter pitch after pitch, but few hit it. Bruce Sutter and his splitter were similar. Wakefield and the knuckler.

For a pitcher to be successful throwing a knuckler, a) the knuckler has to be damn good as any pitcher's average to bad knuckler screams hit me and b) probably needs to throw a 70 mph fastball with very good acuracy.

Could a woman make a team? Maybe
Will a woman ever start a game as a position player in our lifetimes? No and I'll lay money on it.
A pitcher could make it until they figured her out, and then shelled her.

Let me just continue to add to show how ridiculous and ignorant statement is...

Definition of sports: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

How about the definition of an athlete: a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.

Golf involves skill. Race car driving requires skill. Therefore by definition both are sports.

On that, a woman playing minor league hockey is still a woman who is playing professional sports and playing that role better than MANY other MEN who play that sport and that position, so to say a woman can't compete with men is ridiculous when a woman has obviously shown that she is BETTER than some men. So is hockey not a sport?

What about basketball? Hell, there is a professional womens basketball league...and I'd bet that quite a few of those woman are better than some of the men who play the professional game. Is basketball no longer a sport?

With your comments above, you've become the most ignorant person who has ever graced this message board. Now I'm sure it's partly for show and you just trolling as usual, but still...the things that you type on a daily basis continue to amaze me and show how big of a tool you really are.

I don't think the statement was about professional sport but rather MLB. I think he was referring to the highest level of sport in all instances.

The first woman ever won a PBA bowling event this year. I thought that was a huge accomplishment, but ESPN kind of downplayed it.

This does not even deserve a reply. Lets just say I am glad you disagree with me! I feel better about my argument.

Tell that to tiger woods and his 360 lbs bench press... he could whoop your ass all day...and if you have ever played a full round of golf it is very tiring...and I played college football and track. I couldn't imagine 4 straight days of golf

Tiger is in good shape, doesn't mean he is an athlete! Let's see him run point for the Lakers. He would get schooled. Lets see him play WR for the Raiders, not happenin! Let's see him hit a 95 MPH fastball, wrong again.

You obviously love MMA and the like, but you have to be able to tell the difference between an overly-aggressive female and one who could play major league baseball. Don't girls who are good at baseball related movements play softball anyway?

Women have been around longer than baseball has. I think it would have happened by now.
