Bo here is a BASEBALL league, which you have allowed to be a sport because 40 year olds play but no old people play like softball... Strangely I found a over 50 and over 60 league

hmmm baseball no longer a sport?

Talk about trolling! We were talking about professional top level competition and you know it. I have no idea why I get attacked so much on this site! I have come out and said the same thing that at least 3 others have said, and I am the only one that gets flamed? Sorry I don't conform to your thinking. Sorry I have thoughts of my own, and am not afraid to share them. Thoughts that are backed up on facts. Fact, men are better athletes than Women. Sorry if you disagree, but you cannot argue against that!

I play in a wooden bat league. At 29, I am tied as the youngest member on our team. The oldest player on our team is 66 and he still hits low 80's on his fastball. The leading hitter in the league last year batted .385 and was 62. These are former pro's, minor leaguers, D1 college players, etc.

You get attacked so much because you have no class whatsoever and just bash everyone's opinions if they don't exactly match yours and you can't even intellectually debate your point. If others make the same point that you did but can provide facts and evidence to back it up, they are more likely to get listened to. Not by bashing people's religions (which is off topic), making ridiculous comparisons between sports, and just being the overall ****** that you are.

I don't think a woman will ever be able to play in the 3 major leagues. I'm not saying they can't compete and maybe there is a woman out there that could have a great game or two but over the course of a season they just couldn't stay consistent.

In football a woman would get killed. They don't have the size or strength to hang with NFL freaks. Those guys aren't like us. WE would get killed too.

The NBA has even more freakish athletes than the NFL. These guys are 6'6" and perform incredible athletic feats. The centers in the WNBA are smaller than NBA forwards and not nearly as athletic.

MLB is the most likely of the 3 but there is still no chance. For starters girls play a different sport. In HS my JV baseball team had 2 scrimmages against the girls varsity baseball team. In one game we played softball, the other we played baseball. I can tell you they are VERY different games. Girls just lack the upper body strength to play on baseball fields. There is a reason their fields are much smaller.

Bo, yes we are talking about prosports... but you said 80 year olds play golf because it is an activity not a sport... Show me 1 80 year old that has been competitive in a pro golf event... Senior PGA tour is what I am sure you will aim for here... what about the PGA

REAL TOUR EVENTS not skins
Arnold Palmer hasn't won a SPGA tour event or classic since 1986
Jack Nicklaus is 70 right now hasn't won in 15 years

you are the won bringing up 80 year old golfers and I show you a 60 year old baseball league and all of a sudden I am trying to stray the discussion... You my friend have diarrhea of the finger tips

I won't get as crazy as BODIAZ but I will go the length to agre that the best women could not compete with the best men. Its just not going to happen. It would be an uneven match.

As far as Cris Cyborg...she is one hot tamlae! But even then...sure she could probably beat the crap out of me. But then again...so could most UFC fighters(*okay...all of them). But how well could she do against Rampage or Iceman or anybody?

As far as Nascar...I'll say that it does require a lot of stamina and it also requires pinpoint control of a car going shy of 200 mph. Until you try it...don't knock it.

As far as golf...I will say that there are some athletic people who play it but golf is not an athletic type of game. Definitions of sports and athletes mean nothing when it comes to golf or bowling or anything like that. All it requires is accuracy. All of you saying Tiger is some kind of big badass...well maybe he is. But how many other golfers are that good or can bench what he does? There is a reason that every Saturday when I drive past the local golf course on my way to school...there are about 20 or so 60+ year old golfers out there. Its a game of fun and relaxtion. It has little to do with how great of shape you are in. In fact damn near anybody I have ever taslked to about golf has told me golf is what you do once you get out of shape and can't play any other sports. Judging by what I have seen...I'd have to agree.

Probably the same reason my YMCA has a 40 and over basketball league on Saturday morning or a 50+ softball league on Tuesdays... let's scratch those off the list as sports since older people enjoy them

I am not saying anything about an age limit at all. Try not to take your anger at Bodiaz out on me.

What I am saying is that it takes an athletic person to play basketball/baseball/football/hockey/tennis. It does not take an athletic person to play golf. That is my point. I have played before too...for those who are wondering.

As for all of youawho say you have this and that as far as leagues go for older folks...I would happen to think that the level of physical prowess and agility and hand eye coordination is lower than it would be for a younger crowd. That is no big shock since you lose those things gradually as you get older. But it doesn't mean you can't be athletic and old. It just means your not as able to compete. There are always exceptions to any rule so I do understand that.

But in reality...chances are that if golf were so damn hard to do without being athletic...you wouldn't see a bunch of seniors out thre teeing up every single weekend. And I have yet to ever see one senior toss a ball on a diamond. Nor have I seen them hooping it up at the local park. Yeah...that would be the younger folks.

So what defines ones as being "athletic"?

Hey man...I have the same dictionary the rest of you have. All I can tell you is that if you think people out there playing golf are athletic...go out there and watch them or even better yet...do it yourself. I have on both accounts and don't feel it takes that much athleticism. Could it be considered a sport? Yes. Could the people playing even be considered athletes? Yes. Does it mean you have to be an athlete to play it? No.

Hmmm.... If all men are stronger and physically fit than women how do you explain Craig Grebeck and David Eckstein?????
Going back to the OP I do believe that given the chance a woman could play in the MLB. I'm not saying that they will come out of the woodwork and mop up the floor but there should be some that could play in the bigs. There are about 43 million people in the US who play baseball, out of that only 700+ make it to the show. I'm not sure how many women play baseball but sure as heck it is not anywhere close to that (probably a fraction of 1%). If women weren't discouraged early on from playing "manly" sports there should be some that are physical freaks who could play baseball.

And anyone (with or without athleticism) can play ANY sport. The biggest, fattest guy you've ever met could go out and play in an local baseball or basketball league. Just cause one can PLAY doesn't mean they'll be successful.

What makes an offensive lineman "athletic" and a golfer not? What makes David Ortiz "athletic" over a golfer?? I don't consider them "athletic", so does that mean baseball and football are no longer sports. You don't HAVE to be athletic to play.

By the way, I do play golf, and I play on a regular basis.

I feel what your saying but disagree to an extent... most seniors I have golfed with on the course do it A) to get out and play a game they enjoy B) not to compete as much as to socialize and have a few cold ones C) get away from their wives or D) get away from their empty homes and have some company

A round of gold will leave you sore even if you are in shape if you casually golf. Same goes for adult leagues...in any sport

Is Prince Fielder a great athlete or a tubby slob who can hit a ball??? It is how you see it. I think he is an athlete whose best asset is his power... Is John Daly a good athlete??? NO, which is probably why you don't see him winning anything. Not sure my point here but it sounded fun when I began typing it :)

What makes Fielder a "great athlete" instead of a skilled person who can hit a baseball?? As opposed to a skilled person who can hit a golf ball? In a round of golf vs. a game of baseball, who sits on their ass more? I guarantee you that a golfer moves around more and walks/runs more than a baseball player does.

A baseball player swings a bat, lets be generous, and say 16 times a game (4 at bats x 4 swings). A golfer swings a club lets say at least 65 times in a round of golf. If you've played both, you know that they are fairly similar swings.

A baseball player (say Fielder), gets around teh bases 4 times in a game which is about 480 yards in a game...a golfer plays a course, a walks it, which is over 7000 yards.

So now what differentiates a skilled player vs. an athletic one?

I am in the camp that pro golfers are athletes. To play any game at it's highest level that requires strength, coordination and balances qualifies you as an athlete. The actual mechanics of a golf swing and a pitchers throwing motion are very very similar and if you are arguing that pitchers are athletes and golfers are not your logic is flawed and convoluted to say the least. The hand eye coordination that golfer posses and the ability to repeat that motion is a very athletic move.

You guys are totally missing the point that a woman will NEVER play in any of the 3 major sports.

Well truthfully I can't even take the question seriously. I went to high school and college with one of the best softball players the NCAA has ever seen. She often came to our practices and would play catch and hit with us. As good as she was, and as strong as she was (for a girl) she probably couldnt have even played D1 ball on the men's side. And this is a girl that was voted to the NCAA 25th anniversary team (one of the 10 best players of the last 25 years). So to think that there is a female out there that is that much better than her is unfathomable to me.

Aren't there four MAJOR sports? Funny, I'm assuming you're forgetting the one where a woman was actually IN a Major League organization at one point in time.

Regardless, you're probably right, because women won't ever get the opportunity. I would put money that some of the top women in the WNBA could compete equally (and even beat) some of the bench guys on some NBA teams. But those women will never get that opportunity.

As for "missing the point", no, we're not missing any point, because the discussion has moved to the idea of athletes and what constitutes sports...especially consider women HAVE competed with men in leagues such as golf and NASCAR (which of course, some don't see as sports).
