You guys are totally missing the point that a woman will NEVER play in any of the 3 major sports.

Aren't there four MAJOR sports? Funny, I'm assuming you're forgetting the one where a woman was actually IN a Major League organization at one point in time.
This was a publicity stunt

Regardless, you're probably right, because women won't ever get the opportunity. I would put money that some of the top women in the WNBA could compete equally (and even beat) some of the bench guys on some NBA teams. But those women will never get that opportunity.
the worst player in the NBA would be the best player in the WNBA. Woman just don't posses the same explosion, size and strength that a man does. Cheryl Miller was probably the closest thing we've seen to a woman being able to compete with men in one of the major sports.

As for "missing the point", no, we're not missing any point, because the discussion has moved to the idea of athletes and what constitutes sports...especially consider women HAVE competed with men in leagues such as golf and NASCAR (which of course, some don't see as sports).

Tom Watson. Not 80, but you will never see an athlete compete that well at that age in a "sport".

It's a culture issue, not an ability issue. Our high school football team had a female kicker. She was quite good.

You know, until the good ole boys on the team decided it was unnatural and intentionally broke her leg during practice. Well, to be fair, they were just intending to hurt her leg. The fact that it broke was apparently just a happy bonus.

A kicker doesnt compete against anyone except themselves and the wind.

What does that have to do with the price of tortillas in Brazil?

She was a kicker, the defense, well special teams, rushed her I'm assuming and she didn't adjust which resulted in a broken leg? Doubtful but possible. I'm sure that would have landed in the local news somewhere. Link? or at least a name or school?

You seem to be saying through your post that women should be treated equally when it comes to sports. Am I wrong? I think it is unfair to men to have a woman's league and a 'mixed' league because 1 or 2 want to try and join. Either segregate them or combine them but just leave it at that.

The above quote is just really wrong. Women's basketball, while it has come an incredibly long way, is nowhere close to the quality of their male counterparts. A few years ago, the professional women's team in Seattle scrimmaged against a top male high school team, and the high schoolers won fairly easily. There just isnt any way that the elite women can physically match up with the elite men. The difference in quickness, explosion, etc is just too much to overcome. Now, the elite women would destroy most rec league players, but that isnt what the conversation is.

Airline High School in Bossier City, LA. Happened in 1999. Her name was Sandra, but I don't remember her last name. Anything else I need to prove my story is true in your mind? I'd hate to think someone on the internet might believe me a liar.

But I'm sure it was her fault. Not the male players, most of whom I was friends with, that joked about how they took her out on purpose.

As to your point: Why shouldn't women be given a shot? If they're good enough, let em play. If they stink, point them to the women's league. I don't see the issue with letting women try out. Who cares if there is a women's league and women trying out in a mixed league? Does it really affect anything? "ZOMG, a girl! We can't handle it! WE CAN'T HANDLE IT!"

You are a troll. If you really believe that, I feel sorry for you. If a woman ran a 4.3 and was 6'2 225, she would be a pro no questions asked. Get a clue!

But Billy...dude...we were trying to do that every Friday night. On purpose. To whoever we were playing. And they were pretty much dudes. When you are in high school...you can be a real insenstive, immature, and stupid *****. I know. I was. I got on the field and since I didn't throw or catch any passes...my goal was to hit and hit hard. Some guys knocked me on my ass and some got laid out like a drunken stripper but in any case...you were always trying to knock somebodies head the hell off. Its why I say to hell with letting any woman play out there. There is a ton of people out there who would still want to go full throttle and then there are some who wouldn't think it was okay with a woman. Now...what you have is either a really unfair physical advantage or dramatic turmoil. Neither is needed.

Now if you had a girl who could kick ass and take names with the rest of them...then by all means. But unless that was the case...forget it. But chances are they are going to get the same chances or worse out there than the rest of us.

Right. But you didn't take out your own teammates on purpose. You tried to do it to the other team.

I'm not saying the guys were evil bastards. Just immature. It's still a culture issue in my mind.

I am sure more than one of Jackie Robinson's teammates tried to take Jackie out! That is a cop out. If women were good enough, they would be excepted.

Supposing a woman could actually compete on the highest level. Logistically how would the locker room situation work? It's not like there's a lot of privacy in the looker rooms in sports.

I don't think it even matters if women can compete with men. When you get to the very top level of any sport that requires physical ability a woman isn't likely to be able to compete in the long run. This is basically what happened in the hockey case. She had skill, but didn't have the physical strength to wear 60 some pounds of padding as the game wore on. This doesn't mean women are inferior. It just means that they are physically different. I don't see it being any different than a person who is 5 feet tall and can't dunk. Just because a person who is 7 feet tall can doesn't make them better as a human. Not only that, but if there were a pro limbo league they would likely get spanked by the 5 foot person. They are just physically different and can do things physically that others can't.

Okay...hold on. I taste rubber. Let me pull my foot out of my mouth. I thought you meant another rival school did this. Yeah...what you are saying is pretty weird. Nevermind and please disreguard my post. :?

I will say on another slightly unrelated note that we did actually try to go for a couple of the hot heads on the team at times. Not try to hurt them but at least let them know to cool their crap. We had a new freshman QB one year and we were just running through plays. Nobody but the lineman were even supposed to make contact and he kept yelling at us about what a bunch of losers we were. I guess the middle school he came from had won their little district championship or whatever and he felt we sucked. So one play we ...er...accidently gave the nod to the offense to ...you know...um let us through. Laid his ass out quite proper. Of course somebody had to go for the ribs and he actually cried. Right there on the field. It was funny as hell but I really do HATE having to run laps all practice. He never popped off again.
