I can only speak for myself. I hated it when Griffey demanded a trade out of Seattle as he was my favorite player. Never did I ever think he would return to possibly retire with the Mariners. I know for a fact, I will be picking up a few of his Mariners autographs, but will not touch anything of him in Reds or White Sox uniforms.
I believe a slight jump in prices is possible,if he can last long enough to hit his 700th hr in a Mariners uniform. His cards should really see a spike.
Griffey cards have always been hot, they never have taken a dive, especially in the past 3 years. Some of his
inserts and parallels are the most expensive around.
You might see a slight bump over the initial excitement of him returning to the Mariners. But, I think Mariners fans are going to quickly realize that he is not anywhere close to where he was the last time they watched him. He probably should be retired. Last year's performance was just atrocious. I never thought I'd have to watch Griffey struggle to slug .400.
I think his prices will go up if he starts hitting well. With that said, his cards already demand a high prices. Perhaps I should start selling some...
That's the problem. Griffey has been blessed to have played in some very homer-friendly parks (Kingdome, Cincinnati, White Sox). He's going to be playing in a pitcher's park this year with nowhere near the kind of protection he had in Cincinnati or Chicago. Welcome to another .260, 18 HR year. The novelty of seeing Griffey back will wear off 20 games into the season before the Mariners realize that he's now below average defensively and offensively.
I think it will have an impact in the greater Seattle area if not the whole Pac NW, as people will dig out the old stuff and the cheap Griffeys move into the higher priced boxes at what few shows we have left. Overall on the hobby as a whole, I don't think it'll change much. It's Griffey and his stuff sells regardless, coming back to Seattle for most I don't think will really sway them one way or another to spend more or less.
