Will Jeter retire as a Yankee taken from the talk of Jeter breaking Rose's record from another thread. When the Yankees are done with him, ala, Bernie Williams, will Jeter retire or move on.

I just don't see Jeter, as he was a Yankee fan as a youth, go to another team.

What do you think?

The Yankees always buy the best talent they can find.

Jeter's accomplishments as a Yankee and leadership skills aside, do we really think he'll be one of the best shortstops in 5-6 years? Will the Yankee's really want to put a "lesser" team on the field, especially if they continue to not win championships?

If Jeter wants to play everyday for another 8+ years, I think he may need to find another team.

Its funny, but not many were "talking up" Jeter prior to the last few weeks.

The thing is, he's never come off as a "me me me" type ball player.
so would he be interested in hanging around long enough to top 4,000 hits?

Probably not.

Think about it, we are nearing 2010 now, things have changed in baseball.
Sure the ball players are in better shape, but they are also a hellova lot richer.

Jeter makes what, $18 MILLION dollars a season now, correct? and has probably
earned more than $150 million so far on the field alone, then theres the off field
deals. plenty of money in his bank. Also, hes laid all types of hot women.

i just dont see (especially someone like Jeter) these current ball players hanging
aroiund long enough to break all those records of yesteryear

Nicely put!

I don't know where the Rose talks started coming in, but I think anyone who sees Jeter passing Rose is more then likely high off their ass. Of course its a possibillity, but like you put it above, I don't see him gathering 4K hits, let alone topping Rose's record

I think this ignores the realities of baseball, as well as of Jeter as a person.

No one makes the Major Leagues without having a passion for the game (it just takes too much work) and those who don't have a real passion once they make it get distracted by all the "perks" and do not stay around all that long.

Meanwhile, for most players baseball is the only thing they have ever really known. It is what they grew up doing, became rich doing, and have basked in the spotlight doing. To come to the end of something you have worked your life to do is tough in any situation as it (to some degree) means coming to grips with mortality, but in sports it means to much more. It means stepping away from the thing that made you millions and adored by millions. It is the one thing that made you stand out amongst 6+ billion people. You woke up early to work out, ate healthy to stay in shape, iced your joints etc. etc. all so that you can play ball. Retiring puts an end to all that, and in essence, the end to a dream they have lived for their whole life.

It's the reason that few players ever consider retiring until they really can not do it anymore. I know I would not be able to.

Moving to Jeter as a person, he's been a role-model since he started playing as a hard-working professional player. He plays injured and gives it everything he's got. He keeps his mouth shut, is respectful and works hard. If there is any player who will push himself to keep playing (though not necessarily for personal records) it is Derek.

Are you sure, Jim Rice told me that Jeter is a BAD role model :?

He's going to retire a Yankee, and I can almost guarantee you he gets some kind of position in the Yankees front office, at minimum. I wont go as far as saying he'll become head coach, but he will at least have some sort of front office job for life.

And Im sure he'll come to grips with his mortality just fine, bask in the glory of yesteryear and all his rings, and live the good life until he's nice and old. Plus still bang hot chicks.
