Crash Davis said:So if Edgar Martinez makes it then Don Mattingly makes it.
Other than HRs, Edgar and Mattingly's stats were similar.
Oh, and Mattingly won an MVP and almost won a second one, plus he won a number of Gold Gloves while Martinez won zero.
No way Edgar Martinez makes it in.
Does Ellis Burks make it in?
Check the stats people. They don't lie.
Last I checked, Don Mattingly was not a DH, nor did he "define" the position that he played. Ellis burks, he too was not primarily a DH, nor did he "define" the positino he played.
And if you anyone wants to challenge the idea that Edgar "defined" the DH position, I beg you to go look at the name of the DH of the Year award. I'll give you a hint, it's named after Edgar.
When it comes to the HOF, you canNOT compare stats from players at different positions. If that was the case, a second baseman's stats would in NO WAY compare to a first baseman, and we would not have any second basemen in the HOF, same goes for a shortstop.
Players need to be compared as the best of their era, or the best at their position. In this case, Edgar was the best at the DH (a regularly used position in baseball).
