Everyone knows about Panini is taking over next year. I was thinking about how this would effect the rest of UD/Topps releases this year? They can pretty much dump everything they've got left into them right? Will UD/Topps products go up across the board if Panini products are garbage? This is a horrible idea by the NBA IMO.

Here is a part of the article...

Officials from Upper Deck could not be reached for comment, but through a press release Upper Deck’s VP of Sports, Bernd Becker, said: “Our focus remains on delivering great products to the loyal collectors and consumers who have passionately supported Upper Deck basketball products. We are confident the remaining 2008-09 NBA sets will be some of the best our industry has ever seen.”

Topps started off the year good with 2009 baseball too - maybe they are concerned something like Panini could occur in other sports too?

I have wondered the same thing. I keep wondering if it is worth pre-ordering 4-5 cases of Ultimate Collection basketball. If I remember correctly, Ultimate Collection is usually the last basketball product of the year. Wouldn't be a bad idea to hold onto a few of those and see if they go up as May draws closer, and even shoot up further once Panini starts producing what will probably be terrible products...

Should be a very interesting time in the Basketball Hobby for the next year or so, with seeing if UD puts out some nutty final sets and to see what kind of product Panini ends up putting out.It is just gonna be interesting to see if Panini is gonna go out in the market and buy all these rare retired players jerseys to make patch cards/game used etc.

Both Topps and Upper Deck have a lot of game-used inventory and autograph inventory (both physical and contractual) to burn through before 10/1/09. This year's end-of-season basketball products should be crazy.

Didnt i hear something about Panini possibly buying Donruss?

If this is the case, its great for Panini because the can use a well known name in the industry to keep producing cards.

This is just my opinion but I believe previous years NBA cards will see a slight rise for the next few years. Look for alot of people to finish up rounding out their collections or sets they put on the back burner for constantly new cards coming out. I may pre order a case or 2 of Ultimate once I sell my Baseball prospect stash in the next month or so, but thats the best I will do on future product.
