Where is all the hate for the teams that refuse to spend money on the teams and pocket profits. I never understood why all the animosity for Steinbrenner when he always TRIED to put the best team forward.

Its always going to be this way. Fans dont need any real reason to hate the Yanks..they just do. The funny part is that a lot of fans agree that Steinbrenner should be in the Hall of Fame. George was big on signing the best players on the market, and that is exactly what they are doing now.

I wrote in an earlier post, I hate the Yankees, I am a Red Sox fan but I do not have any bad feelings or anger at the way they spend money. It is not against the rules, there is no salary cap so who cares how much they spend. I weould much rather the owners put the money back into the team then pad their pockets. I know the Steinbrenners make their money but they try and put out a winning product. Like you said I would rather see that than teams not spending to improve the product they put on the field. It will just be more fun for me to root against them this year. I love the discussions and "arguements" with other fans. But there is no need to be angry about it.

Moves like claiming they didnt offer Teixeira a contract and that they were not one of the "mystery" teams interested in signing him, only to sign him 2 days later doesnt help. A simple, "no comment" would have helped. As a Red Sox fan, I hate the fact that players on the Yankees have said they would never play for the Red Sox and dont, but a snake like Johnny Damon leaves Boston for there.

There just seems to be something bad that always happens to guys who leave Boston in recent memory. Mo Vaughn fell down those stairs in the dugout and hurt his back. Pedro has been injured. Damon has been injured. Faulke retired. Clemens turned out to be a DB even though it was a long time after.

Trying to buy a World Series IS a reason to hate the Yankees. You like them for a specific reason, so why can't people dislike them? Nice double standard.

Emmm I think his bank account has alot to show for it. Do you really think Damon ever had any loyalty to any team. These guys are real people who try to make the most they can for the limited time they can. How dare he leave the RedSox.

Would you say that if your precious Derek Jeter left the Yankees for the Sox?

Great point it must have chapped sox fans something fierce watching Wade ride around the field on a horse.

the reasons to hate this spending is it puts the market out of whack.

- you have the yankees and sox bidding players contracts way up forcing the other teams to pony up or miss out. this leaves the other teams strapped in pursuing other proven players. then 3 years in you see a fire sale and short ended prospect trades that only benefit the teams with the most money.

- it throws off the market for players on the downhill side of their career. take johnny damon... a great fielding small balling leadoff man who is past his prime. the contract the yankees offer is 4 years and too much .5 million. now you have other players whose stats are just below, equal, or greater than captain caveman earning well above their skill level.

- it provides the agent with a way to falsley inflate free agents values. the rumor of the yankees or sox or mets being involved adds instant value to their player. anyone think at the time of signing zito was worth 126mil? no inflation and false demand increase the perception of value.

i prefer the way the yankees spend money instead of how the royals do but i wish there was a way to evaluate the contracts without the bidding and inflating that goes on. it would be a cheaper game for the fans to watch and would level the field out for most teams. i still dont understand how the yankees can pay out these contracts but cannot afford to build their own stadium without public money... :?

Of course it is out of whack my point is they are playing by someone elses rules. I understand big market vs small market but that is why they have the luxury tax. I think that tax standards need to come down to give these other small market teams the extra funds to get some good signings/better scouting.
