Let's say you emailed a retired athlete who was one of your sports heroes as a kid. And let's say he emails you back. Now, let's say that at the same time you are emailing him, you find an item that is being auctioned that is supposedly a game-used item from over 20 years ago and you'd like to buy the item. My question is, would it be too much to ask the athlete for a favor to look at the item online to authenticate it as an item he used? I was about ready to email him back asking him this favor, but it just sounds a little forward. I don't want him to think I emailed him originally just to get him to look at the item.

Thoughts?

Unless he's a complete *****, I would have to think he would appreciate the novelty aspect of it.

I say go for it! :D

I would say do it, ask him if he would not mind looking at something for you.
And tell him because you want to buy it, but you know there can be fake stuff out there.
Thank him for his time and if he does not you say, you understand.

Just my 2 cents. And good luck I hope he helps you out.
