Would you rather.... Adam Jones vs Josh Reddick

Just a simple exercise for Tuesday morning. If you were starting a team from scratch, you'd obviously take THE Giancarlo Stanton as your #1 outfielder, but if you had to choose between Jones and Reddick for your #2 spot, who would you go with?

I've been a Reddick fan since he was in A ball w/ the Red Sox, and it seems like he's beginning to put together a great season w/ the A's. If you compare his stats, age, and skill set, he fits in w/ the athletic outfield type w/ some power. He's 2 years younger than Adam Jones, and plays in one of the worst line-ups in baseball, thus getting zero protection. If he manages to keep up his numbers once Cespedes and Manny can hit around him, he could be considered an elite outfield talent. On the other hand, Jones has always had more hype behind his name, gets props for his athletic capabilities, and plays on a team that really has a good fan base and is off to a great start.

Considering all of this, I think I would take Reddick. He's smaller, and is still rough around the edges (especially w/ that beard he's got going on), but I like how he plays the game, and I think he could be a 20-30 HR guy, steal 10-20 bases, and play almost any outfield spot. You could also sign him for about half of what Jones is going to get paid. He's also younger, which could translate into better production for a longer time frame.

So, that's all.

Adam Jones all day long. With over 2,000 more career plate appearances, he's shown he is a better overall player and is only just over a year older.

Ok, so the age difference is about 18 months. But I'm not sure why you say that Jones has shown he's an overall player. Last year Reddick posted 1.9 WAR in 278 PAs, while Jones has posted an average of 2.5 WAR the last three years averaging about 550 PAs over that same time.

I'm not saying Reddick is a bad player, I'm answering your question. Reddick has 144 career hits. Jones has 677, with 165 in 2010 alone. I want the guy who has much more experience and who has progressed nearly every single year of his career... all while being only a year and a half older. Could Reddick be a better player in the future, sure. Is he right now, certainly not.

I want the guy who has much more experience and who has progressed nearly every single year of his career... all while being only a year and a half older. Could Reddick be a better player in the future, sure. Is he right now, certainly not.

If you had $100 to spend on either players cards and had to spend it all by midnight tonight, which one would you buy? Last I looked Jones 2003 UD RC auto was around $70, and Reddicks 2008 BC RC auto was at $20.

What does how much their rookie autos sell for have to do with how they compare on the field. I would take Jones over Reddick regardless of what their cards sell for.

I was thinking the same thing. What does their card values have to do with anything when comparing their current abilities? We already know who I'm taking. But with that said, I do like where Reddick is heading.

Nothing really, just that this is a baseball card forum, so why not talk about baseball cards? It's just one more element to consider.

Yes but their card value has absolutely nothing to do with the question you posed. So it's not an element to consider at all. If you want to talk about their card value, simply ask "Who would you rather invest in - Reddick or Adam Jones" then it would become relevant.

I never said that. Where are you getting that? You asked a specific question and when some people gave you their opinions you created a completely different scenario to try and make a point. I'm just saying it doesn't work.

I wasn't trying to make a point. I'm just asking a question about people's preferences. It's the same as saying do you like player A or player B? Ok, so would you rather buy player A's or player B's cards. I don't see how the 2 questions can't be related. And if we can only stick to the absolute original line of discussion in these threads, then we should probably shut down 90% of all the threads that ever get started. Geez...
