I have always loved this card and wanted to own one. Glad I passed when I had the opportunity to buy one.

If a former employee did in fact sell off 70 copies of this card it begs the question of how they got them. Going a step further, if one person has 70 copies then how many are out there? At the very least the projected population went from 100 to 170.

This is bad news for the guys who paid big bucks recently... The card is essentially a back door unfinished card...

How much extra were these selling since it was believed that Bush once owned them?

Wait, you think this card will see a drop in value over this info? The article confirms that both were legitimately produced by topps, it's hard to imagine Topps master set and variation collectors NOT pursuing these aggressively. The value (final prices) on the sales of this card have been declining recently due to the influx of them available compared to 5-10 years ago. Now interested parties who previously thought there was only 100 copies of one version of a card "know" there are two versions of a still genuinely rare card: a /100 and /70. If anything, any sellers of the card with gloss are going to be receiving a premium for it being "bush used."

Also, speaking of the images in the article, I'm wondering what cards Bush is holding, they are not his 1990 Topps card. Is there a known 1990 or earlier Arthur Shorin card?

After taking a look at the PSA Population Report, it appears that PSA is distinguishing the Bush issued cards from the others. Currently, the report has 38 slabbed copies of the cards not sent to Bush. WHo knows if any of those 38 came from the "70" if that story is true.

I have wanted a copy of that card for years. With all of the recent copies surfacing, I considered making a run at one. I am glad that I avoided them. How do we know there are only 70 extras out there? If you're going to print 70 copies of a super rare card, why not 170? Who not 270? Was this a situation where one employee went and ran some cards? Was it a situation where a lot of employees had cards printed? Confusion brings about hesitation among buyers. The only guarantee right now is that glossy copies that originally belonged to the President are going to sell for a fortune.

From the new smr.

First pic is a close up of the coating Topps used on the card. Almost looks laminated from those machines in super markets.

Next pic, which is CRAZY, is of the lot John sununu submitted to psa.

I had been following the auctions of the George Bush card for several years now. For the longest time I had never seen one on eBay. About 3 years ago one was sold at a private auction for $5000. After that auction, they began popping up on eBay. The more that popped up, the lower the prices went; typical supply and demand economics. Now it seems there's always four or five being sold. I suspect it's from buyers panicking that they'll take losses on their investments, but they don't seem to understand that they need to stop selling so many of the cards on eBay if they want the prices to go back up. Me, I grabbed a PSA 7 for $3600, and I wish I had waited, because they're now going for about $2200. On the plus side, I got a PSA 8 for $1000 because nobody else saw the auction :D

Anyway, I don't think the fact that there's a variation is going to harm anybody much. Topps said it's a legitimate card, and it has it's own terrific backstory that I think is just as good as the White House story. Besides, we baseball card collectors love variations. I have 14 different 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken FF cards myself ;)
