I opened the mail box 2 days ago to see my new Beckett Baseball card Plus sitting in there. I always get excited to read becketts and see the new listings ect. Well anyway, i turn the page to see the hot list. Number 5. on the hot list is the following card:

2008-09 USA Baseball 16U National Team Jersey Patch Autographs #BH Bryce Harper BV $700-$1000

Is beckett, and the baseball card world crazy or something?? I don't know much about this kid, I do know that he is 16.

WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD SPEND THAT KIND OF MONEY ON A KID THATS 16.

This kid is 1 year older than me. He still needs to play through his career without injury until he gets drafted, then sign, play well through the minors without getting hurt, then make it to the bigs and make an impact. Who the hell would spend upwards of $900 on a kid that has such a long way to go, and will probably end up being just an average baseball player? this is ridiculous. I hate this part of the hobby. How autos of some 16 year old kid who has a potential to maybe be good in 5 years has autograph/patches that are selling more than autograph/patches of current stars/ HOf's and more. This really bugs me

I agree with you, it's outrageous.

I wish Harper the best (because some members would likely say I want him to "fail" just because I think the hype is a little too big right now), but that's a crazy price for a kid who has never played in the minor leagues.

Come one it is Beckett and the are the ones that seem to over price most cards. That way the card companies
can justify charging what they do. Come you two this surprises you?
Beckett just keeps the prices up so the secondary market can justify the prices as well.

It books so high because they sell for insane prices on eBay.

Cards are worth what people are willing to pay. Should they put the price lower because some people would never pay that. I don't see what's sad about a hobby where you can sell a card of a 16 year old player for $1,000s of dollars... I see it as awesome.

Do you know who LeBron James is?

The kid had his high school basketball games televised on ESPN.

With any other prospect, you are paying for the hype.

I'd like to thank the OP for creating this thread. There's only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is NOT being talked about.

I know nothing about this kid. But from an outsider's perspective, this sort of thing is both crazy and totally unsurprising. Think about the name "prospecting". It says nothing about baseball, or even sports really. Lacking context, it could be talking about anything from mining to the stock market. In actuality, it's gambling. In a way, I understand the appeal; but in the end the losses make it not a worthwhile pursuit for me personally. I still haven't completely decided if it's just my nature, or if it's because I just don't have enough money to enjoy it.

I suppose there is room in the hobby for both prospectors and traditionalists (for lack of a better term). But I almost think they are so different as to require separate publications. I may be completely out of step here--that would be no surprise either. You can probably guess my perspective from my sig.

That trailer park at 130 and 168
People have always bought into the high end of hype and rarely, but occasionally, have come out doing very well in the end or at least cashing out at the right time. Then again I can remember guys paying $20 for Score Mark Rypien RCs and $3-5 for Brien Taylor or Frankie Rodriguez 1992 Topps BASE cards. It's been going on for the 25 years that I've been in the hobby and will probably continue on for the next 25 and beyond.

You've been here since January and this is somehow a surprise? Harper, his prices, his draft status, this Beckett cover even, have been discussed on here ad nauseam. This isn't new, this isn't a big deal.

The price reflects the market demand. Is it crazy yep sure is but it is also a reality check for some.
