I think a more interesting question would be who are the sheep that buy his cards at nearly a K. His cards had been out for quite a few months, and most people who have the slightest knowledge of baseball prospects knew who Harper was. It's not like he magically popped up out of nowhere. I guess you could say the same of Strasburg.

Bradical- Yes i know who lebron is. But basketball is alot different, and its partially why i'm not the biggest fan of basketball. Is basketball, the 1st few picks in a draft immidiently become stars alot of the time in the NBA. They don't have a long way to go like baseball prospects doo.

Brett Keith- yes i have been here since january, and yes i am just really realizing it. I have heard of the kid for awhile, but didn't care about him, since he's so young. I didn't bother to check his cards and what they're going for. So yea, its surprising

Dang, $3.25 for that? I remember picking up basketball becketts in 1996 or 1997 for $2.97.

I loved Baseball Card Magazine, it was at it's best before it became a Krauss Publication. It's value was not as a price guide but in it's editorial content. The best was calling 1991 Fleer baseball a mustard-on-bread-crust sandwich. Greg Ambrosious and Kit Kiefer were a riot.

That Magazine was the POOP!, along with SCD back in the 80's were the best thing EVER for collectors.
Todays kid just doesnt "get it" and no, that's not their fault either. Back then there was no internet, no message boards, etc.

What part of the sale do you hate so much about?

First of all, Beckett doesn't create prices, they report them. They are always two months behind on actual sales.

Second of all, just because someone wants to pay a grand for a piece of cardboard doesn't mean you have to hate something because of it- people pay thousands of dollars for pieces of cardboard of players who never made it to the majors all the time, and I don't see any hate there (see your old t206 sets), and yes, there are more of those southern league commons in existence than those Harpers/50.

People pay over ten-thousand dollars for action figures as well, why don't you hate those people to?

Furthermore, you should be glad there aren't more uber-rich people in this hobby- you wouldn't be able to afford anything of value if there were cause the prices would be blown way past your budget in no time.

A thousand dollars is like pocket change for alot of collectors out there.

Just be glad there is still interest in this hobby.

It's people who pay thousands of dollars for minor leaguers who keep prospectors in existence, both as buyers and sellers.

I'm not a harper or a stras apologist, but I do like the fact that there are people who are willing to put their cash behind their opinions out there.

IMO prospecting and collecting are so different in focus they require different boards *and* publications. We're usually talking about players in completely different leagues for the most part plus we're talking about buying versus selling activities.

While there could be a small degree of overlap with collecting, the selling/investing aspect easily gets blown out of proportion, as does the importance of minor league players for the vast majority of people.

This is not to say that there is anything wrong with investing/prospecting or the minor leagues in general, it just gets too much attention compared to the real deal - the major leagues and collecting.

I know nothing about this kid. But from an outsider's perspective, this sort of thing is both crazy and totally unsurprising. Think about the name "prospecting". It says nothing about baseball, or even sports really. Lacking context, it could be talking about anything from mining to the stock market. In actuality, it's gambling. In a way, I understand the appeal; but in the end the losses make it not a worthwhile pursuit for me personally. I still haven't completely decided if it's just my nature, or if it's because I just don't have enough money to enjoy it.

I suppose there is room in the hobby for both prospectors and traditionalists (for lack of a better term). But I almost think they are so different as to require separate publications. I may be completely out of step here--that would be no surprise either. You can probably guess my perspective from my sig.

i don't understand how this is called prospecting. So people are buying this kids auto/patch cards for $800-$900. There aren't many players in the MLB today that have RC auto/patches selling for that much. This kid is gonna have to be amazing for they're investment be worthwhile and for them be able to flip the card for a profit

go look and see what these sell for

05 06 the cup crosby patch auto (only 18 yrs old when this came out)
05 06 the ovechking patch auto
03 04 exquisite lebron patch auto (like 19 yrs old when released.)
05 06 exquisite patch auto
2006 adrian peterson exquisite patch auto

now granted those are other sports, i used thos as a comparison because baseball dosent have a super highend product to get the key rc's from. The closest things are chrome gold refractos. So in that case go look what Braun, Hanley, Mauer, Wright gols refractor autos go for.
