WOW. Only thing I can think of is they wanted out from his contract if it was a decent size.(Nate did he have a big contract) They also knew they could not keep him out of the bowl game legally and now they can

I think that he had a clause in his contract that he was due to receive $800k if he was the coach on 1/1/10...not 100% sure if this is accurate though...

He did just sign a pretty decent sized contract. Its been rumored the reason why Gerald Myers suspended him right away was to save the $800,000 bonus he had coming to him if he was the coach as of December 31 11:59p. I also believe that since he was going to win his Injunction (justifiably), he was fired.

Sad sad day in Texas Tech football. We have put our program back several years if not for good.. We had several high end recruits that were coming to Texas Tech in what was supposed to be the greatest recruiting class in Tech history.

Wow, what a joke.

Little Mr. James was just pissed about lack of playing time and just "not being very good" and is taking it out on the coaches.

I feel bad for Tech fans, this is NOT good for the program and the recruiting class that is incoming.

Texas Tech Fires Mike Leach

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/12 ... wt=nytimes

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Texas Tech fired coach Mike Leach on Wednesday, just two days after he was suspended by the school as it investigated his treatment of a player with a concussion.

The school handed a termination letter to Leach's attorney, Ted Liggett, just minutes before the two sides were to appear in a Lubbock, Texas, courtroom for a hearing on the coach's suspension.

Liggett said the letter said Leach was "terminated with cause effective immediately."

In February, Leach and the school agreed to a five-year, $12.7 million contract. According to terms of the deal, Leach was due a $800,000 bonus on Dec. 31 if he were still the head coach at Texas Tech.

Leach was suspended by the university on Monday after receiver Adam James alleged the coach twice confined him to small, dark spaces while the practiced.

James is the son of former NFL player and ESPN analyst Craig James.

Texas Tech plays Michigan State on Saturday in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.

Tech is the second Big 12 school to launch an internal investigation into a coach's treatment of his players.

On Nov. 16, Kansas investigated Mark Mangino, who got a big raise after he was national coach of the year and went 12-1 in 2007. Some players said he was insensitive, though others defended him.

Mangino resigned Dec. 3 after reaching a settlement with the school that was later disclosed as a $3 million buyout.

In an affidavit included in Tuesday's court filing, Leach said he "would never intentionally harm or endanger a player" and that he has been "forced into this situation without being afforded any process." He also said "absolutely" no evidence had been given to him that showed he had violated any university rules or standards

If I was a player for the Red Raiders I be mad, you were recruited to be in Leach's system. Now your role might change.

Not to worry if you're him. He'll land on his feet somewhere. He's basically the whole reason the Big 12 has become a passing conference and I imagine he will only be unemployed the time he allows himself to be unemployed. Cincy could really use him.

I hope Leach stays in the big 12 and plays tech and destroys them over and over and over.

Odd that the same AD fires a coach due to him storing a player in a closet yet is also the same guy who hired Bobby Knight after choking a player while at Indiana. If Leach put him in the room as punishment for getting hurt, I agree with him being fired but I don't see it that way. It is coming out a lot that the James kid has an attitude problem and was milking the injury (not faking but letting it be known he was hurt and didn't have to participate) in front of other teammates and coaches. I can see how that can rub everyone the wrong way. Mike Leach didn't but him in a closest for any type of medical reason, it was to send a message to his team and the spoiled brat that a doctor doesn't excuse you from the coach. Even James story that led up tp being placed into the closet doesn't make sense. Leach told someone to stand guard at the door to make sure James didn't sit down yet how would the guy guarding the door know if he sat down if it was dark with no windows ? That just doesn't make sense.

A sad day for your team indeed. A day before an 800K paycheck was coming. He will win much more in court when he pursues legal action. The doctors and the players even have Leach's back if I read it all correctly.
