Rumored to be 5 years and 70 to 75 million
or in other words 15 MIL per :o
I am surprised to see a catcher make that much coin.
Thoughts?

I really hope this ends up being closer to 60 mil, but will be glad to have him locked up

that's laughable. just because they didn't get Pujols doesn't mean they should throw away money

Sadly, that's what it is. Have to send a message to the ignorant fans that they'll at least keep one Cardinal homegrown star around.

Totally agree with you. I said from the beginning of that contract that if we gave him that kind of money we'd have to dismantle the team. Cuddyer is gone, Kubel is gone, Nathan is gone. Mauer and his agent were looking for a payday, and they got it. He's a top tier defensive catcher, and an even better hitter, but nobody past or present is worth that much money in my opinion.

If you're going to overpay to retain a player, you did it for a surefire Hall of Famer, not an aging, defensively orientated catcher.

I'd have to respectively disagree with most of the posts. Yadi was a huge part of why we have won championships. Texas was a multidimensional offense that didn't run at all against the Cardinals. Yadi was the reason. I'm not saying he is a force offensively but had a respectable season last year and his defense and game calling is second to none. I would argue he would mean more if we lost him than Pujols.

Kei Igawa 5 years $20 million and $26 million posting fee to pitch for your AAA team.
Carl Pavano 4 years $39 million to play video games
Roger Clemens 1 year $18.7 million to play half a season and suck, especially in the playoffs
A.J. Burnett 4 years 66 million - paying $20 million for him to play for the Pirates

and the big finale

Alex Rodriguez 10 years $275 million with 7 years left @ $27.5 million a year.

My point is, we all have terrible contracts. No reason to continually point out Mauer's albatross of a contract all the time when your team has a WORSE one.

I don't know, Alex hit more HR last year than Mauer has the last two years combined.

Mauer is soon going to be a 6 HR a year First Baseman.

Wow, you all are pretty brutal.
The guy is not even 30 yet and has 8 years of playing time under his belt, and two rings.
Last year he batted over 300 and pretty much halts other teams running game.

Most pitchers say that he is like having a manager out there behind the plate and he controls the game better than anyone.

I'll just keep buying his stuff for a fraction of what Posey and Mauer cards go for...

Mauer makes what, like 23 a year?

I think this is a good contract for 5 years. He's one of the main faces of the franchise, and they couldn't afford to lose him. They don't have anyone near ready to take over his position.

And let's not forget, Alex was signed before it was revealed that he was a past steroid user. The Yankees paid him for what he was, a Top 2 player in baseball.

Joe Mauer, was paid for one outstanding season, one in which he was worth $23. Now he is a catcher who's knees are breaking down. He still has six years left on his contract, and is destined to first base / designated hitter.

While both contracts look horrible right now I wouldn't hesitate in taking on Mauer's over ARod's. Rodriguez's deal is almost certainly the worst in baseball and has every possibility of looking even more horrifying at this point next year. It makes Vernon Wells's deal look like Longoria's.

And don't forget Rodriguez and Burnett played vital roles on the '09 team that won the World Series. While overpaid, at least the Yankees got a lot of their money back out of them.
