I don't think so. The rules are a bit confusing but it looks like he would have been eligible for the draft after next season if he wasn't added to the 40 man roster.

Never feel sorry for a minor league player getting traded into the Yanks organization. His pier diem per day along with monthly pay just went up plus better hotel stays while on the road if he starts out in AAA. In case anybody was wondering the Rays and Reds have the cheapest pier diem in the Minors.
