There was a long thread a while back about some Dallas school that had a severe blowout game against another school and there was a big to do over it. Basically people the whole country over were all up in arms that one school would have the gall to show up another so badly. Lack of sportsmanship and so on.

So...there is a team here in the third ward of Houston. Any of you who live near or around Houston know just how rough of a neighborhood this is. But its a neighborhood that is known more for its crime rate than anything. Yet there is a team playing basketball for Yates High School there that is literally blowing the socks compeltely off the competition. Badly. In fact nobody around Houston wants to even play them.

Here are a few of the stories appearing in the chronicle(Houston's newspaper).

There are plenty more to find on their site. In any case...they have routinley crushed other schools. Badly. My question is...is it bad sportsmanship...or are they just too dang good? One thing to keep in mind is that Houston lacks major talent for the most part when it comes to any sports. Not the greater Houston area but the inner city schools. Most of the inner city schools are in low income areas or have low income students going there and the school's budget for sports is rather low. When I played baseball and football it wasn't uncommon to see fields that looked like abandoned lots. Hell...Jones high school had hills in the outfield. If you were doomed to play center field...you had to play it short or give up visibility because playing semi deep...you couldn't see home plate. None of the kids even had cleats. All of them wore regular sneakers.

My point is...most of the inner city schools are poor and they don't have the facilities that some of the bigger schools do like Katy and the Woodlands. They also don't have the coaches like the bigger and better schools either. But to say that a school from such a poor nieghborhood can go to all kinds of tournaments and win every single game and also be ranked nationally...I think its saying something. Although I don't have any ties to the neighborhood...I found it kind of cool that such a small school in such a poor part of town could overcome all the hurdles they are faced with and still be one of the best competing programs in the country. I also could care less how much they win by because it has long been my opinion that HISD as a whole is a joke when it comes to funding and education. The kids aren't unathletic by any means. They simply lack the proper coaching. They lack the proper facilites and equipment. Imo...maybe some good will come from all these beatdowns and the district will be forced to implement some funding changes that allow for better coaches and staff.

In any case...I do realize this is only high school but you guys might want to see who you will be collecting in a few years if you still collect basketball. These names will certainly be on the top rookies list when they do enter the draft. I also wondered why there wasn't already a thread on this to begin with since its supposedly been covered nationally, even by espn. With all the ruckus over the Dallas school who put a walloping on their opponent...I figured some of you guys might find this interesting. There is a team in 3rd ward that does it every freaking week.
