Well Biggio might have been in some new sets as well as they may have added some previously unrecognized cards. I think most hardcore player collectors just worry more about totals they've compiled based on what they know is out there rather than based on what Beckett says. As it stood two years ago I had well over 100 cards not recognized by Beckett. A lot of them are oddballs, well known variations, and star cards but still....worrying about Beckett is only going to be a headache.

There is some kind of trend in the hobby where new cards are released on a fairly regular basis...so your stats are ALWAYS going to be changing. Beckett did just add 13 Biggio cards from 2013 Panini Prizm. Besides...Beckett is so 2005.

I guess I regard collecting "stats" in the same manner as I regard the whole "super collector" issue.

There are always going to be cards their checklists won't list. Remember back when all the price guides used to come with a sheets of cards? Beckett doesn't recognize any of them, except for the ones from Topps Magazine. They're very spotty when it comes to the old Star sets, only listing maybe half of them. Pretty much anything unlicensed is not in their list, and I don't know if there's anything that lists all unlicensed sets. Even obscure yet licensed sets get ignored, like the 2006 Topps Update Limited Edition, or the 1991 US Playing Cards Canadian version. A star player from the early 90's will probably have up to 50 uncataloged cards, and there's really nothing you can do about it except for make your own lists.

I'd think in the case of Will Clark, Griffey Jr., Ripken Jr., and the like, it's more like hundreds of unlisted cards. Star cards alone push it up crazily as there might be several promos and several versions all numbered differently. At 9 or 10 cards multiplied by all the different versions plus the promos, that's a lot of cards. Throw in all the cards that came with magazines...you're really adding it up.

Yea, I hear ya. According to Beckett, Bonds has almost 12,000 different cards. He doesn't have any licenesed cards issued past '07 but I see 2013 Sportkings has some unlicensed nonsense listed reecently. I have a checklist I received from a fellow Bonds collector which lists regular cards and oddballs which is what I use to navigate my searches/needs. I believe the entire checklist lists around 8,000 cards.

Yeah, the more I think about it, 50 is certainly a low number for a guy like Clark. Off the top of my head, I know I have at least 15 Broder-type Clarks, stuff with no set name, just "Series 1" or "Series 3" or "Grand Slam" or other such nonsense, even one or two with weird dice games on the back (like the 1961 Topps Dice set). Looking at the batch of oddballs I got last week, I see Clark magazine cards from SCD, Baseball Cards Magazine, BB Card Price Guide Monthly, and Topps Magazine (the only ones of these that are cataloged). Didn't tpeichel's checklists have all of these uncataloged sets on them?

Beckett does not differentiate between the 1988 and 1989 OPC and Topps Stickerback cards, so where they list one card, two actually exist. Not to mention all the different sticker combos available on each card's back; for example, I own four different sticker combos on the 1989 Topps Will Clark Stickerback. Biggio was in the 1990 Stickerback set, who knows how many different stickers his card came on?

Check your 1990 Topps Stickerbacks. I own one copy, the Biggio card with a Ryne Sandberg #152 sticker. On COMC, there are also Biggio cards with a Tom Glavine #26 sticker, and a combo Ramon Martinez #61 and some Blue Jays pitcher #190 . That makes at least 3 versions of just that card!
