I was listening to the radio on the way home and the DJ was doing a little thing he was calling your best and worst autographs. The only one I heard was best: Tom Brady, worst: Vanilla Ice.
Now, one caveat, I'm not talking aesthetics, or stylistically bad autographs, there's been enough made of those. I'm talking about a guy, or girl, you regret getting something signed by. Do any of you think you can qualify one of your autographs as your "worst"?
I'll chime in after a few responses.

When he was still a good prospect for Royals, I regretfully had Montgomery sign some baseballs.I haven't heard anything from him in years.Whoops.

Unless I "ruined" something with an autograph (and in my mind unless the signature has nothing to do with the item, then it only adds value and character) then I don't have a worst autograph in my collection.

I could see you getting a multi-signed item done by an additional member later, who maybe scribbled partially over another existing key signature. Another fail might be to get a signature, but the pen fails or the item it wrong. That said, this would probably qualify as my worst auto thanks to UD for the crappy surface they chose:

It's not my personal worst, but I'll speak for my friend.

Although it's not sports related, we were at a rap concert and he had bought a CD of an artist he knew nothing about but liked at the show - well we ran into the performers later that night and he got his CD signed by the wrong artist haha not a huge deal but in our friendship/inside jokes - it was classic.

I won a Dirk Johnson (Eagles punter in the early '00) autoed mini helmet at a show once. I plan on clearing the auto if I ever need an emergency item for a player to sign.

Magic eraser. This used to say To Zachary on it, but I got it signed for my girlfriend's dad, whose name is Jerry

The ink doesn't smear or scratch the picture when you erase it?I always wonder how much value is decreased when something is signed "to someone".That bugs me when it is made out to someone else like that.

I didn't have a problem. It looks great, and the old man couldn't have been anymore excited than he was when he opened it up.

this is card is a shame, Dr. Mike Marshall is one of the toughest living players from whom to get an autograph

Brett Lawrie..guy was an absolute jerk in the MWL. He was rude and cussing kids out and when he did sign it was a scribble. He even made fun of a guy by making faces at him during the MWL All-Star signing.

Why is Marshall so tough? There was one year all the UD Sweet Spot signatures look like crap.
He just doesn't care to sign, other than a few paid signings for high dollars. Chris Potter Sports has done a couple recently signings and the prices were down to about $150-180 or so per signature. Still ridiculously high.

Did he perform first ligament replacement surgury?Don't get why he would be in such high demand.

I hear he has pretty much always been that way, even as a player in the 60s/70s. Once a player becomes tough, the demand tends to rise. Set builders, team collectors and other theme collectors (award winners, all-stars, etc) then need these tough players and the supply isn't there.

There was a collector named Bill Corcoran who broke down the wall and got him to sign some items years back, but the prices were around the $250 range I believe. Even now, I believe Marshall directs inquiries to Corcoran. Since then, Marshall has softened slightly, but not enough to fulfill the demand.

The funniest part is that you could reach Marshall through his personal website, he would answer questions, and seems extremely approachable, etc, but he just flat our refused to sign for fans. The Bill Russell (Celtics) counterpart for baseball.

I guess Marshall was a better player than I gave him credit for then. There have got to be former Cardinals like Andujar that are tough signers, but there's no way in hell I'm shelling out $150 for him.

Funny that you mention Russell.I went to a signing years ago that he attended, and his signature cost $250 or something. And he was the only guest who wouldn't have pictures taken with or sign insciptions.

Got a mini helmet signed by Peyton Manning at Colts training camp years back. That wasn't enough for me apparently. Had Brandon Stokely sign the other side of it. ::facepalm:: Tried to erase the Stokely off and ruined that side of the mini. My plan is to one day turn the Manning auto into a custom card.

You mean that a Magic Eraser didn't take it off? That's really a bummer

Wasn't Stokely a good player? Is it worth more without him?I have a signed Chiefs mini helmet with HOF'ers Bell one one side and Dawson on the other. My favorite piece of memorabilia not a card.

Stokely's no HOFer. I wish I hadn't added his signature to it, but it's what I had at the time. It's cool. Peyton's auto will be worked into a custom sometime in the future.
