Very happy for Ben. Class act. Not gonna lie, I am a little shocked at the amount.

I thought I read 5/30, but I could be wrong

Maybe you are right. I can't tell if it's 3 years/$30 million or 3 years with 2 options that could be worth $30...

3 years plus 2 more in options. If both options are picked up, Zobrist will make just under 30 million over the five years.

Glad to see this happen!

The amount makes more sense then. Great signing for the Rays and once again, very happy for Ben!

Rather them just sign Carwford to a 2 year 15 million dollar deal then deal with Zobrist.

Zobrist is my favorite player, so I'm stoked to see this happen. However there is still no excuse to not sign Crawford. You have Kazmir's contract gone, and Burrell is gone after this year. Pena is also a FA after this year. Between Burrell and Pena that frees up 19 million.

Besides, there is no way Crawford would take a 2 yr/15 mil deal.

In what world would Crawford take a 2/$15MM deal?

I've read in a few places that the Rays will be cutting payroll to around $60MM next year. If that's true I can't imagine Crawford will be back.

I strongly suspect last year was Zobrist's career year but the money still makes sense even if he regresses a fair bit.

I fear he will not be back also. Which is why I wish they would have traded him before the season started. Unless this team totally falls apart they will still be in contention at the deadline, so there is no way they move Carl then. They are going to end up getting nothing for him besides the draft picks. I wish they would open the wallet for Crawford. He's been there his whole career and was the face of that franchise through so many losing seasons. If anyone should be a Ray for life, it's him.

EARTH : 2 years at 15 million each.

Upton, Pena, and Pat all come off the books this year and I doubt any of the three return.

Crawford's last contract extension is already a home grown discount. He can max out his contract to $11.5M with all the escalators in 2011.

If things fall about, Upton will be the one traded. He is in line for a huge payday even though he doesn't really deserve it.

Garza will be the one that lock up long term next.

I've also heard that Crawford isn't so sure that he wants to stay in Tampa Bay, which might be another reason why nothing got done this offseason.

There is absolutely no chance Crawford accepts 2/$30M. Undoubtedly, the Yankees are going to offer something in the range of 5/$60 minimum. Everything coming out of New York all last off season was that they were letting Damon and Matsui walk to take a full fledged run at Crawford. I am surprised to see Zobrist get such a large contract after showing very little prior to last year. If he continues to play like last year, this is a good deal for the Rays. I fear he is going to regress quite a bit, however.

I LOVE Zobrist. But I'm a realist. And I believe what you have said as well.

Zobrist is one of my absolute favorite players in the game. What an absolute class act, on and off the field. Great for him!
