I've been tracking this down for years and have gotten nowhere. I've been told there are a few ways to verify these:

1) Ron Darling is listed on the back of the 1988 but not 1989 checklist for the Mets
2) Benny Santiago's first name is spelled either Benny or Benito
3) Cal Ripken Jr. has the "." or not on the end
4) Henderson is spelled Ricky or Rickey

I'll be able to confirm the Ron Darling one here in a couple days, have a Ron Darling on the way. If he's not on the back then that should rule that out.

What I'd like to see is people to post scans of theirs so we can look at them and see if there are any nuances (even any others than are mentioned above)

Mozzie and I both have this one:

I sincerely hope we bust this myth because if there truly is a way to prove two different years I'm going to be bummed.

I'm thinking the barcode might be the key if they do exist.

My McGwire:

I just noticed something... I'm betting there are 4 different bar codes.

Notice that they say "West 43500", "East 43000", "West 44500", and East "44000" by the divisions. This matches up to the barcodes (last five digits before extra 0). McGwire and Canseco has a barcode that matched the AL West number. Ripken had a barcode that matches the AL East number.

Also, there would be little incentive for a manufacturer to create new packaging between the two years unless there was a change in the checklist. That should be the key.

Well, apparently I don't have my Ripken one anymore (or just can't find it) so I can't add anything to this

I am glad I am not the only one!!! I have this, it sat on the top of a super shoe box of gwynns that every time I opened it would slide off. I grew to hate that thing because of that! I can't for the life of me figure out where it is now, the one and only time I want to find it...
I'll keep looking. ::facepalm::

All 7 of mine match of with this theory:

AL WEST
George Brett
0 29116 44500 0

AL EAST
Cal Ripken Jr and Wade Boggs
0 29116 44000 5

NL WEST
Santiago and Valenzuela
0 29116 43500 1

NL EAST
Keith Hernandez and Vince Coleman
0 29116 43000 6

Unless we can find two different UPC's of the same player, the UPC theory is a no-go.

All of mine also:

1) Do not list Darling in the checklist
2) Benny Santiago
3) Ricky Henderson
4) Cal Ripken, Jr.
