It was brought up that a 2022 Goals thread hadn't been started and January is almost over!
I'll start. Feel free to share your Goals for the year hobby or otherwise

GOAL #1: I have 35 needs on my sweet spot signatures list (does not include 2005 GU subset) I would like to take 3-5 off that list realistically

GOAL #2: Pick up more Trout Gold and Griffey refractors. Be more choosy in my general pickups

GOAL #3: keep listing cards on eBay and Twitter. Want to move everything not sweet spot or select GU/autos. Put that money into savings and see where I'm at by the end of the year.

GOAL #4: Decide what I'm doing with my HOF RC and GU collections, either Add to it or move 90% of it

That's all I have for this year. Small and manageable

A lot of my list at the beginning of 2022 is the same as 2021 so I'll just copy and paste it.

Jeff Frye Goals:

Add one of these. None of them are easy.

They don't show up very often but I'll give it a shot.

Ginter Goals:
  1. Finish three modern year sets.
  2. Add 10 1890 N30s.
  3. Add 10 1890 N44s.
  4. Add 10 1888 N11s.
  5. Add 5 1887 N28 Ginters

I'm actually well on my way on this goal after saying last year that I really wasn't in to Ginter that much anymore. I did make the decision to quit working on the mini parallel sets and I've moved a good chunk of those to other collectors. I've added 15 mini insert sets and 11 box loader sets this month thanks to another collector who was moving on from his master sets at cheap prices and a crazy cheap price on all the non-sports box loaders from 2008-2019 on eBay.

Number 1 should be easy. Honestly I could probably do it with a Sportlots order tomorrow.

The 130+ year old sets that make up the other four? Well not so much. I have added 2 N28s to my collection in the last two weeks so I'm on my way there at least. I'd like to add one of Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley, John L. Sullivan, or Jack Dempsey.

'90s Insert Set Goals:

Finish fifteen sets.

I blew the top out of this one last year with 62 sets finished. Doubt I do that well this year but who knows. Edit: 4 down, 11 to go.

Autograph Set Goals:

1998 Donruss Significant Signatures Master Set:
  1. George Brett Black Ink
  2. Nolan Ryan Unsigned Redemption
  3. Ozzie Smith Unsigned Redemption
  4. Billy Williams Blue Ink Unstamped
2005 Donruss Signature Series Milestone Marks Tier 3:
  1. Duke Snider
  2. Nolan Ryan
  3. Gaylord Perry
  4. Johnny Bench
  5. Stan Musial

So I actually just started the 1998 Significant Signatures set in March of 2021 and I knocked out 28 of the 32 cards in 9 months. I've already gotten 1 of the 4 cards I needed this year in the Brett Black Ink. I'd still love to find the unused redemption cards but they are exceedingly rare because Donruss/Playoff didn't return them when redeemed and the Billy Williams would have to be an auto that wasn't sent in for the Koufax redemption so good luck there.

I got the 2005 Milestone Marks Perry cheap off Facebook a couple weeks ago so I thought I'd grab the other 4 this year. There is also a Willie McCovey T2 /44, a Tony Gwynn T1 /6, and a Gary Carter T1 1/1 that share this design. I'm not going to try to grab them unless I see them.

Autograph Collection Goals:

Add 20 N*gro League autographs to my collection. - I'm actually pretty close to being done with this one already. I've got 15 unique autos in route to me right now. I'd really like to add a Turkey Stearnes auto this year.
Downsize my Cardinals Autograph collection - I actually started this a couple weeks ago when I set up at a show but I've come to the conclusion that I don't actually need six Skip Schumaker autos or nine Breyic Valera Chrome autos whether they were a buck or not.

HOF Rookie Cards
Obtain at least 1 graded rookie card of players I grew up watching as a kid; my cutoff is 1980 (year I was born) through my freshman year in college (1999). Ideally, a minimum grade of 9 would be the standard grade, but depending on costs and age of cards, 8 or 8.5 would do as well.

I just started this and I don't plan on completing this by the end of the year, but I would like to add at least 10 cards by years' end.

Topps Chrome Black
I started collecting the base set of 2020 Topps Chrome Black at the end of last year and have 13 cards (13%) out of 100, not including some refractors and autographs that had really good prices. It's an easy enough goal that I shouldn't have an issue completing by the end of the year. Of course, some players have outrageous prices (COMC had Ohtani for $90 I think, and that's just the base card), so I'm hoping I can find a sane seller for certain players.

Finish Building Sets
Over the holiday break, I went through a ton of my cards and sorted them into various boxes. Have a bunch of sets that I started and never finished (mainly because the pandemic made it unreasonably expensive). So, once I create spreadsheet checklists for each set, I'll start knocking out cards needed so I can put them away knowing I'm not missing any cards.

That's just a start. I will probably add to this throughout the year if I start any new goals.

Well let's see how I do this year:

- Get 25 of the 35 Trent Dilfer cards in 2021 Mosaic. 30 seems too tough since 3 of the 35 are 1/1 and who knows how many others are "SSP." These have been showing up kind of slowly.

- Get my 1988 Topps autographed set needs down to 20. I'm at 29 now so it seems reasonable but it's down to the real tough and/or expensive ones.

- Get my 1988-present Oakland A's player autograph needs into the single digits. At 31 now after just starting this project last year so it seems very doable, but I'll also have to keep up with all the new 2022 players.

- Cut my T205 & T206 A's needs to 5 cards. At 9 now, but commons are getting expensive. It wasn't that long ago that I could grab many that had eye appeal to me for $20 shipped, but I haven't been able to find any below $40 lately.

- Finish several A's parallel team sets I'm within 1-3 cards of completing: 1991 Topps Desert Shield, 1994 Pinnacle Artist's Proofs, 1994 Pinnacle Museum Collection, 1995 UD Electric Gold, 1996 Collector's Choice Gold Signature, 1996 Stadium Club Extreme Players Gold, 1997 Circa Rave, 1997 Leaf Fractal Matrix Die Cuts, 1997 New Pinnacle Museum Collection, 1997 Score Showcase Series, 1998 Circa Thunder Rave, 1998 Donruss Gold Press Proofs, 1998 Flair Showcase Legacy, 1998 Leaf Fractal Matrix Die Cuts, 1998 Topps Chrome Refractors, 1999 Bowman Gold, 1999 SkyBox Thunder Rave, 2000 Bowman Gold, 2000 Bowman Chrome Refractors, 2000 Stadium Club First Day, 2000 Gold Label Gold/100, 2001 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractors, 2001 UD Exclusives Silver/100, 2003 Leaf Certified Mirror Gold, 2003 Topps Chrome Black Refractors, 2004 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractors, 2005 Reflections Turquoise/50, 2006 UD Gold/299, 2006 UD Special FX Green/50, 2009 Topps Black, 2012 Topps Black, 2013 Topps Black, 2014 Topps Black. Okay maybe a little optimistic but these are my top wants.

- Finish scanning the nicer cards in my collection through the 2012-2016 teams. Had the same goal last year and made it like half or 2/3 of the way through before I went insane from all the cropping and editing. Hope I can at least get this finished this year so next year I can start working on the more current players.

- Finally, don't go overboard buying crap I don't really care about. I can't have everything so I need to be better about focusing my money on the cards that bring me the most joy.

a. Collection Goals
  • Yankees Modern Topps/Heritage -- add 100 cards, need nearly all Topps & Heritage base and SP from past 3 years, shouldn't be too difficult
  • Yankees Vintage Topps -- add 50 cards (including upgrades), through purchases buy but also trade my higher-end autographs and rookies for these vintage needs. Become more selective with lower end cards.
  • Paul O'Neill -- add 25 cards, will be harder than the other goals
  • Autographs -- add 5 cards - mid to high end Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, Giants, HOFers
b. Organization Goals
  • Set up my office and card room (currently being painted!)
  • Perform regular searches for vintage, until now my focus online has been on modern. I've typically reserved vintage additions for shows, but that has been at a standstill since 2018. Now the same cards I need are 2-3x the price.
  • Combine my website/spreadsheet. Currently I use Google Sites and Excel and have to edit/enter everything twice. Haven't been able to find a system where it publishes directly as a webpage without opening Google Sheets within a window.
c. Hobby Goals
  • Attend the National Show in Atlantic City
  • Attend 2-3 local shows
  • Explore other avenues for trading/sales -- Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Auction Houses

Would love to sell of the bulk of my Cal Ripken collection. I don't have anything graded. Just quantities of cards
pre 1995. Couple of 100 each of the Topps, Fleer and Donruss along with other brands. Plenty of oddball/food/magazine
issues. Lots of magazines with Cal on the front cover. Glasses cups, pins, posters. Living 400+ miles from the Baltimore
area, setting up at shows won't happen for me. Oh well.

Should be pretty much like last year.
1) Continue chipping away at my 2021 Heritage Superset. I have over 1000 different cards from the product, but my target range just going by total count is around 1725. Some hard to find and expensive cards in the 700. Collecting Heritage was just different from years past with the odds on things being sooooo long, and people didn't seem to open it in the volume they used to because the value wasn't there.
2) Then there is the High Number set, which I'm treating as a completely separate project. I picked up some nice stuff on release, but I pulled back to focus on the main set first.
3) Finish 1941 Play Ball set. I only need 6, but they are Joe D, Dom D, Teddy Ballgame, Pee Wee, Greenberg, and Dickey. All the biggest names, won't be cheap, but I really need to finish this. I bought my first card almost 30 years ago.
4) Get a really nice vintage piece. The ship has sailed on PSA 4 1951 Bowman Mantles at affordable prices, but 1952 Bowmans are still gettable. Or a T206 Ty Cobb of some color. Cornerstone card.
5) Same with a Ja Morant card. I've decided he's good, and I'd like to get a nice RC of his.
6) Chip away at my Magic collection wantlists, but I won't bore you here with that.
7) Continue to capitalize on the last waves of whatever the hell happened to the hobby in the last 2 years and sell more stuff profitably.

That 1980 card is a sweet one! Bought a complete set quite a few years ago because of the Bird/Magic/Dr J card for under a $100

For the most part my goals have not changed much of the past few years. 2022 looks similar to previous years, although looking ahead, some changes in my personal life may limit some of the financial flexibility. Time will tell.

1) Jackie Robinson signed baseball from his time in the ***** Leagues. There was a team ball from the team that went to Venezuela in 1945 that sold at Christie's a few year back. Would love to find where that one or similar. This remains my #1

2) ) I collect integration pieces in general and love finding contracts, but there is one other specific item I would love to pick up, and that's a ticket from Jackie Robinson's 1st Minor League game. They are rare and super expensive, though not as expensive as his Debut with the Dodgers so it may be possible.

3) Looking to find at least one contract from someone associated with Integration. Last year I was able to acquire Don Newcombe's 1946 Nashua Dodgers contract. I'd love to find his 1946 Danville Dodgers contract if such a thing even exists. (He and Campanella signed with Danville, who reported that they were not ready to integrate, and they re-signed to play in Nashua.) Another item I've been trying to find for years is Dan Bankhead's 1947 Dodgers contract.

4) Find at least 1 significant lineup card collection (happy to pay a finder's fee for anyone who connects me to someone and a deal is made). Still love all the research involved there.

5) Looking for a WWII-related Larry Doby item among other WWII-baseball items.

6) Would love to pick up some more barnstorming programs and other barnstorming-related items. Barnstorming games were maybe the first place that fans could see African American players playing against MLB players. So many big names toured including Ruth and Gehrig in their time, Jackie Robinson, Musial and so many others. Incredible and fascinating history tied to the tours.

7) Hoping to find the remaining tickets from 9/11 I don't have, at least 1 ticket from a game that Jackie Robinson played football at UCLA (1939 and 1940), a Dec 7 1941 ticket (Pearl Harbor)

I've been meaning to document my collecting goals for the first time and am finally coming around to it. I originally had many goals, but I wanted to note something down that I could actually have a challenge, but could obtain if I'm wise about it throughout the year. I've decided not to include Felix Hernandez in my goals for the year. I'm always actively looking to add nice cards of his to my PC, but at this point it's all about the aesthetics of the Felix cards. Here is what I will be focusing on for my PC in 2022:

For my Mariners collection:
  • add on card autographs of the following players:
    • Ken Griffey Jr.
    • Randy Johnson
    • Ichiro
    • Alex Rodriguez
For my HOF collection:
  • add game used cards of the following players:
    • Babe Ruth
    • Mickey Mantle
For my 2007 Sweet Spot Classic game used collection:
  • Add 25 cards I do not yet have (96 on the checklist and I have 8 at the time of this post)
For my organization:
  • Get all autos and game used into toploaders/one touches/sleeved up
  • Get full PC collection into new boxes and categorized by player/team/HOF
  • Get full PC collection catalogued digitally (still need to take new pictures and solidify what web based platform to host on)
Looking forward to each of us in this thread providing updates as we (hopefully) checkoff areas of our collecting goals.

I updated my goals above. After reading through the thread again, I did not include organizing and uploading my collection which is a definite goal.

1992 Star Ad Card. Book value might be a dollar. That's my lone collecting goal for 2022...to take this card off my wantlist after thirty years.

I wouldn't pass up a chance to land the 1990 Donruss Blue/White tests either, but I doubt I will ever have that opportunity.
