Gotta love letgo.
I saw an ad for a Mike Stanton autographed baseball on letgo.
Seller was asking $35. There was only one fuzzy photo. I
couldn't tell if it was an OMLB ball or not. I asked him for other
photos. He sent some back. One had an MLB Authentic hologram.
I looked it up, and sure enough, it was a certified Mike (Giancarlo)
Stanton from a rookie year signing.
I told him I'd take it, but could't meet up until the weekend, unless
he could meet me half way. (He's 15 miles away, but on an LA
weekday, he might as well be on the moon.) He told me he didn't
have a car, but if I could come today [yesterday] he would take $25.
I decided to go at lunch. I don't have a Stanton yet, and figured his
autographs would be much higher soon.
I'm halfway to him and my phone starts blowing up with texts. My
phone had dropped between the seats on the floor, so I couldn't check
them until I arrived at the meeting place.
I read them (all from the seller):
12:55 hey dude u still com in
12:57 if not just tell me
12:59 I can do $20 hmu
1:01 im here dont see u
1:02 i can really use the cash
1:02 pls dude
1:03 ok $10
1:05 I respond: Sounds good to me. I'm in the parking lot.
At this point, I know something is sketchy. I notice his tweakerface.
(For those unfamiliar with the condition, Tweakerface is an ailment
that your facial structure possesses if you have smoked crystal meth
for any period of time. Even if you never recognized it before, you've
seen it. Some of you here might have it. If you've ever smoked ****,
go look in the mirror. That's Tweakerface.)
He shows me the ball. It's legit. Without me asking any details, he
tells me this elaborate story about how his friend gave it to him for
Christmas but he is a Dodgers fan so he doesn't want it anymore.
Up to this point, I felt a little guilty because I assumed he had no idea
what he had. So I asked him, do you know anything about this ball?
"Yeah, this guy is about to break the home run record. I looked online
and his autographs go for a couple hundred bucks. They will probably
go for more when he's the MVP."
Sold. $10.
I'm not naive enough to think his birthday story was true. He stole this ball.
But he was going to sell it to someone, no matter what. How would I go about
returning it to [or even finding] the rightful owner? What can I do?
