Every year at this time I like to rank my overall top prospects on one list. My criteria is based upon both past performance and future potential to his parent team. Normally I rank only 100 prospects per year, but considering how this past year’s draft yielded such an abundance of talent, I decided to expand it to 150.

Disclaimer: I did not attend any minor league games last year, nor do I claim to have any scouting experience. This list is the product of my own research of statistics and online scouting reports.

Awesome. Probably the best list I've seen, or at least the one that I agree with the most. I skimmed every one, and nothing stood out that made me say "WTF?!?! Is this guy retarded?!"

Here are guys that stood out to me as being too high or too low

I think should be ranked higher: Olt, Lee, Cox, Martin, Green, Erlin

I think should be ranked lower: Montgomery

I also would have flip-flopped Bauer/Bundy (I prefer Bundy) and Cole/Taillon (I prefer Taillon)

This was the hardest decision I had to make when compiling the list. I was literally agonizing over it. Ultimately, I do think Taillon's ceiling is slightly higher, but Cole will reach his faster. And Pittsburgh needs all the good pitching it can get, asap.

Overall, a very solid list, nicely done.

For me, there are a couple that I have to wonder about but, as Keyser Soze pointed out, there weren't any that stood out as being ridiculous.

I fully agree with putting Cole over Taillon.

What made you decide to put Bauer over Bundy? For me, Bundy seems to be the easy choice between the two due to how incredible his ceiling appears to be. Heck, I'd put Cole ahead of Bauer. Of course, with Bundy, maybe I'm just biased from watching him play and being blown away by how developed his stuff was for a high schooler - I'd have been very impressed if I saw someone pitching like that in A ball even.

Bauer is both closer to the Majors and has a wider variety of effective pitches in his arsenal than Bundy and Cole.

What do you like about Cosart?

Good athlete, very quick arm, can touch 97-98. Excellent CB, plus CU. If he develops more command, could be a legit #2 SP. If not, I'm guessing reliever.

Its hard for me to care about player rankings, for the most part. It's just a very arbitrary exercise. Until someone can tell me the difference being ranked #19 over #32 and what it means its kinda silly.

Why is Nick Franklin so low?

Lost time due to injury, has a fringy arm and his future position being a bit cloudy is why I ranked him where I did.

This is where I devalue lists like this.

You say you did not attend any minor league games last year, so how can you come up with accurate evaluations of a player like "excellent curve", "plus cutter", and needs to "develop more command" without physically seeing the player in action?

I am just curious where your evaluations come from on players? Watching endless online video, repurposing what other scouts have written, or assumptions based off statistics?

As I summarized in the disclaimer, I read numerous reports (from dozens of websites) and get opinions from those who have seen them in action. I do not claim to be an expert, or that I am "accurate" in any sense of the word; I do research and form my own rankings from it.

There's nothing for you to devalue - I don't consider this list to have any value. I consider it a fun (yet exhausting) way to pass the time, nothing more.

So you have to physically see something to know it's true? I haven't actually seen Stonehenge but I know it's a bunch of large rocks stacked on top of each other because someone that did see it told me about it

First of all, i like the list and kudos to JP for the time he spends on it.

Yes, if you are going to sue that rationale as to why or why not a player should be on the list, seeing them helps with that...
