Interesting!

Not sure of order but these would be there for me:

Johnny Bench
Yogi
Bill Dickey
Carlton Fisk
Josh Gibson (imagine what his career stats would have been in the Majors!)

Pudge is head and shoulders above Piazza, a DH who happened to wear catchers gear.

Honestly, none of them can match Pudge's offensive #s and gold gloves. Just because the guy played for the Rangers in the late 90s early 2000s doesn't take away from the fact that he is one of the top few defensive catchers EVER and a far better hitter than Bench or Boone.

I think Cochrane and Dickey are in the top 5 for sure and Bresnahan is considered to be the best dead-ball Catcher.

Another question...

Are there any current guys who might could contend for this?
Obviously Ivan Rodriguez, but what about Mauer, McCann or Martin? Could they be on their way toward that?

I think Bench is without question #1, with Berra following right behind at #2. The next three in no particular order would be Campy, IRod and Cochrane.

So the top 5 would be
1. Bench
2. Berra
3a. Campanella
3b. Ivan Rodriguez
3c. Cochrane

The remaining 5 should include...
- Fisk
- Piazza
- Dickey
- Gary Carter
- Harnett

In about 10 years' time maybe we can bring this kid into the discussion.

(He played OF on the USA team, but his natural position is behind the plate.)

What makes Berra better than Dickey?
