Eight games back with 18 left to play is tough enough, but check this out:
The Cardinals have currently played the fewest games in baseball, 144. Barring a rainout, they will play every day from now until October 3rd.
They currently have already played 13 games in a row. Unless they have a rainout, they will have played 31 consecutive days to end the season. Their last day off was Thursday, September 2nd.
This Sunday, September 19th, they host the first place Padres at 2:15pm in St Louis. They then fly to Miami to play the Marlins for a makeup game at 3:10pm on Monday. Then, they pack up and fly to Pittsburgh for a 7:05pm game on Tuesday. They play two more games in Pittsburgh before a 3 game series in Chicago with the Cubs.
They fly home Sunday night, and begin a three game series with Pittsburgh before ending the year with a 4 game series with the Rockies. 31 games in 31 days...what a tough way to end the season. Even if they made the playoffs, I think they would be worn out.
