Assuming that Jeter plays this weekend, he will break Pete Rose's record of 735 plate appearances by a player 36 and older. He currently has 728, and Ichiro is right behind him with 718. Here are the 20 occurrences of 36-year-olds with 700 or more plate appearances: http://www.baseball-reference.com/play- ... reit/bPbPg
Rose topped 700 in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1982 while playing at age 36 and older. He most likely would have had 700 in 1981 as well, were it not for the strike. I didn't realize that he was 37 the year he hit in 44 straight games (or that he went 1-16 in the four games prior to the streak).
One last bit about Rose: Did you know that when he retired, he was 6th all time on the list of HRs by a switch hitter? Now, he is tied for 31st (with Tony Phillips and Roy White).
