The path within baseball card making had a fork in it and Topps clearly is interested in making a hinged product. The hinged two-panel booklet has expanded into the double-hinged three panel booklet, etc. What's next? Who knows.

Today, there is software called Mosaic. It’s been around for awhile. The software constructs or deconstructs images using monitors. For instance, this software can be applied to multiple flatscreens (think Blitzer’s Situation Room back drop) so together the flatscreens form a singular image, or they can be used separately. This is what Mosaic software does.

The mosaic, like the puzzle format in the past, could be applied to baseball cards. Rarity in today’s baseball card world is mostly based on condition of the card and the pyramid format with base cards being at the bottom and 1/1’s at the top point. What if a different type of rarity was manufactured based on the mosaic format with serial numbers. Individual cards that when placed together create a seamless concept-image that is larger than the individual cards, yet the individual cards can stand alone. Like creating a run, or rainbow, a collector could choose to contruct a sequence.

I’ve seen pictures of collectors pinning baseball cards to their bedroom, or dorm room walls. These baseball card shrines create a montage emblematic of a devotion to the heroes of the sport. I’ve seen collector’s make these magnificent one-of-kind framed montages with a player’s autographed check and several Auto’ed 8 by 10 glossies. These things are incredible. There is something about a well designed display of memorabilia that commands attention and money. Rare cards are sequestered to individual acrylic holders. What if nine of these holders could be placed together 3 by 3 to form a one-of-a-kind piece, or singular image devoted to a player, or players?

By the Letter did something similar with individual manufactured nameplate letters so it’s not like the wheel needs to be invented. Rather, think more like Roberto Clemente Puzzle with Auto’ed, GU, and full-bleed pieces. The collector would then have an interest in a variety of card formats. The printing plates would be sweet.
