When I start doing the rough math on, say, just 2005 Prime Patches... I quickly decide to stop trying to figure it out.

I swear I had that conversation with my wife the other day. With Hurricane Isaac here for a few days, we didn't get mail on Wednesday or Thursday. Friday I got home and had 12 bubble mailers waiting for me. That's what sparked the conversation we had. LOL!

I can't recommend a PO Box enough. Costs $17 per 3 months, and I've avoided these conversations!

As for the original question, I have earned $350.44 in ebay bucks since 7/16/2009. I don't even want to do the math, especially since that doesn't count COMC, Marketplace, sportslots, and forum purchases.

I know the number is well into the thousands and is higher than I would even guess.

My wife totally supports my hobby and collection. She enjoys seeing the new additions to my collection as they come in the mail. The only time she will say anything is if we are low on money and I am cruising eBay. She will simply ask if it can wait until next payday.

I'm not incredibly active in my collection - with that said - I haven't spent much (if any at all) on my collection. I would say 90% of what I have I've gotten for "free" b/c I bought them in lots and sold the other cards and came out ahead. There have been a few low #'d cards that I purchased individually but they are offset by how much I made on the lots I bought.

I should also add that I don't collect game used, autos, or 1/1's so that keeps the price down as well.

I have about $1500 of a Rick Porcello player collection. I'd sell the doubles if there was a profit to be made at some point in the future, but my goal is to get at least one copy of every single 2008 and 2009 rookie card he has. I don't have a checklist (and I don't really know where to find one either, what do you guys use?) but I would guess I have about 70% of them, plus some nice parallels mixed in.

I don't keep track of how much I've spent on my Ripken collection... I'd probably quit if I knew how much exactly I've spent!! :p

I have spent a good amount, not sure exactly as I started my collection trading for items. But after the trades when I started buying I would say I am somewhere around 5K. That being said I could have beefed up on more of the commons and base cards to enhance the numbers, but the larger Supers and booklets have limited me to a lower number overall. Now, I can say i ave quite a nice collection of low numbered Ethier's but as far as total counts goes it can be higher. I sometimes take a payday and browse COMC for a base card beef up, but I should be doing that more often as I said to get my shear numbers up.

I have no clue nor would I want my wife, my kids, other family members or my friends to ever find out. I just thought of 5 cards of the 4,000+ ARod cards I have and those alone totaled over $5K.

Bottom line: Too much $

Gwynn, great conversation. My wife sees tons of boxes of cards and automatically thinks they are stuffed with money.

I'm not sure but the way I think about it, half my collection was somewhat cheap and economically priced. I'd buy lots or find stuff at shops. But once you get done with all nick nack base commons and stuff, you start buying singles. Those add up on shipping alone. I pay at least $1.95 on shipping alone per card bought on eBay. So, based on that, I figure that makes every card purchased on eBay at least $3.

That's a lot of money. Over time of course. But it still adds up. At least it's not like going out and partying and wasting money on beer. All you have to show for that is a hangover.

As far as you guys getting grilled by your wife, just equate it to her shoes and purses and make up and getting her hair and nails done. For the price of one purse, you can probably pick up about 10 to 15 cards. I've never understood nor do I enjoy it when someone who doesn't collect sits there and gives another person hell about it. And it's always funny when they tell you it was a waste of money and then they explain to you what they would have spent the money on.

I had roughly $15,000 into my Chavez collection before starting to selling it off. I have made back roughly $10,000 of it and still have over 2,000 cards 500+ or so are Autos or Game Used. I would like to think I will come relatively close (Within $1,000 - $1,500) of breaking even after 11 years of fun.

I am an accountant, so I have tracked it in detail over the past 8 years and it is over $17K including shipping. I don't have data before that, but I didn't have as good of a job then, so probably only about another $4K or so the 10 years before that. Looking at some of your collections and comparing it to mine, I think some of the estimates I have seen in this thread might be quite low?

Keeping transaction by transaction will ALWAYS add up to more than the average person keeping track in their head or just back of the envelop figuring it out. Also, you're taking into consideration s/h and I think a lot of people would be SHOCKED if they knew what they've spent in just shipping for the cards they own lol... Let alone the cards.

What I'd say is someone posted the site which shows you your historical eBay purchases and adds them up and I closed the window after it got back like 3 months.... Again, not worth even knowing for me... It's a hobby and I love it
