Insanely High Shipping Cost...Thoughts?

Hey guys, just won a card on eBay. It was a high dollar item, and the listed shipping cost was $50. I emailed the seller asking how he'd be shipping the card, and he said USPS insured (the card was approximately $2,000) 2-3 day. Obviously, that is quite a liberal upcharge (unless I'm sorely mistaken). Anyone have any thoughts on what to do in this situation? Do I have any recourse? Thanks

A 6oz package going first-class with Signature Confirmation and $2000 worth of insurance is $28.56.

Is $50 too high? Yes.

Did you know the shipping cost beforehand? Yes.

Do you account for shipping cost when buying an item? Hopefully.

Should this be a question? No.

nothing you can do since you knew the shipping before bidding. It would have been different had the seller tried adding after the fact. I would say youre being overcharged by about $20. It costs about $24 for 2k worth of insurance $2 to ship and another $2 for signature confirmation.

I dont understand why you are asking for recourse when you bid knowing the price beforehand.

It wasnt a surprise, it was listed when you won the auction.

I completely disagree with this line of thought, that people are "OK-ing" the shipping price by placing a bid. Obviously you are agreeing to pay it, but that doesn't mean it isn't too high, and that's what the shipping cost DSR was created for.

If I can win a card I want for a price+shipping that I'm happy with, I'm going to do it. I'm not one of those ****** bags who leaves 2 stars for charging $2.75 for shipping, but if the guy is charging $10 on a $25 value card, then yeah, I think anybody would leave a DSR that reflects the unnecessarily high shipping cost. That's what those are in place for.



Back to the original post, $50 on a 2k item doesn't seem THAT high. If I remember correctly, it costs something like $25-30 for insurance alone on an item of that value. If you're really worried about it, a good place to start would be to message the seller and ask him politely if it's really going to cost $50 to ship, but honestly that's something you should have asked before you won it.

I agree with what you're saying. I never said it was alright to rape people on shipping.

My point was more in line with the bolded part of what you wrote.

You knew the price when you bid, should have asked prior to bidding and figured it out then. If the guy is going to be shipping 2-3 day with insurance to cover the $2,000, I don't think you're going to have an issue with poor packaging. Being that you were able to buy a card for $2,000, I really don't think an extra $20 is that big of a deal to worry about.

Depending on how he packs it and how fast he ships it (priority etc) it
may not be far off.

Include me in the crowd that feels that knowing a shipping cost in advance and bidding anyways means you accepted the terms (in 99% of cases) but regardless, in this case it may anyways be justified or pretty close.

It is also being shipped 2-3 day. Which would be priority. So, tack on $5 to the $24 insurance costs. Pretty sure anything over $200/$250 Is Sig required by usps, just dealt with this at the PO, so no added cost for sig confirmation. $29 and the rest goes toward their $200 FVF. High? Yes. Insane? Not really. Just leave them one star on shipping and that'll get their attention.

Gotcha, I saw a thread about this a few weeks back and I couldn't believe that there were multiple people saying that bidding means you're agreeing with the shipping cost, so I wanted to chime in on that but maybe I misinterpreted.

it is high. it's actually cheaper to send 1 day express with insurance for $2000 than to send via priority with sig conf and insurance for $2000

Maybe the guy was also trying to recoup the cost of the envelope, toploader, tape, ink used to write your address on the envelope, gas for his car to drive to the post office, wear and tear on his shoes incurrred while walking into said post office, etc, etc. (Don't you love it when guys say this stuff to justify their S&H?)

Seriously though, the eBay Bucks you'll get takes much of the sting out of the shipping. I'm of the opinion that you agree with the S&H fees if you bid. If you're willing to pay it because you really want the card, then reflect your feelings about S&H in the DSR.
