Will Selig deny Melky's batting title?

It seems this new rule doesn't apply if the player has enough ABs... would anything have happened if Melky had just one more AB??

Doing the right thing would not take steroids in the first place.

This is true, but what I think everyone is just saying that its nice to see him do this on his own. I do however think someone important strongly urged him to do this. Essentially like when you want to fire someone, but you pressure them to resign or retire.

Is he just intelligible? His stats have to stay though right? There's now way to erase them with out throwing off everyone he played with and against.
Since he won't have enough plate appearances to qualify, he won't appear on any future leaderboards.
For instance, if in a few years, you go to a website like ESPN or a stats site, and look at the top ten batting leaders for 2012, he won't appear because he doesn't have the required PA.

Dont kid yourself, he's not being honorable.

He's trying to rebuild his image he destroyed and get more money from a team

glass half full/glass half empty...either side has valid points. the matter of the fact is, he did the right thing.

Also MLB & MLBPA agreeing on something this fast is great in its self!

Overstatement of the year. Melky went to the MLBPA and told them to revise the rule to make him ineligible. MLBPA then hands the gift to the MLB to do the rulechange. Make no mistake, the MLBPA still has MLB by the balls.

Had this been the other way around - bonehead Selig going to the MLBPA to change the rule before the end of the season just to save his commish record from another blemish, the MLBPA would have fought against and/or denied unless Melky got involved to tell the union that is what he wanted.

If I understand this right, they are suspending the rule about increasing PAs for suspended players, correct? In other words, if Cabrera had had one more PA before getting busted, there's nothing that could reasonably be done?

Such an interesting case.

Melky pulled himself out, if he hadn't they would have just added an 0-1 to it and his final average would have been that. And not for all suspended players only players that "served a drug suspension for violating the Joint Drug Program."

I understand that, but I'm asking if a player can pull himself out (HEY HEY!) if he already has 502 PAs.

the way I understand the rewritten rule, a player who has been suspended for violating the MLB drug policy will not have additional plate appearances added to his total to reach the 502 mark (or whatever the future requirement will be if the number of MLB games are changed) and additionally becomes ineligible to be declared a statistical category champ.

I have a gut feeling this rule will be touched again in the future when you have some guy suspended in September for violating the MLB drug policy after he's reached or exceeded the number of required plate appearances to be declared a statistical champion (batting, slugging, OBP) unless the ineiigibility clause currently applies to even those who have exceeded the minimum plate appearance requirement.
