Topps has a MLB License, they don't need the watered-down PA license. They're the real deal. And I challenge you to find a positive word I've ever said about Panini's products, licensed or not. I think their products suck with only a few exceptions.

Yet, you promote them prominently on your website... BG

Allstars is still an idiot for making a bet.. then backing out of a bet by saying he doesn't bet.
Geez, just drop it already. They both just apologized and all you're doing is trying to reignite the argument like a nosey junior high girl.
You bringing up crap like this is one of the reasons these Leaf threads turn into 20 page pissing matches.

Threads such as these make me count the days until Topps' stranglehold on the MLB license expires.

Sure thing, hall monitor. Except that it's allstars rearing his nonsensical head that's doing it. Read back and see it wasn't me that brought up the last thread. Kthx?

Jealous?

I have no Panini Baseball products in my shop. Hope that eases your pain. And their licensed products in the other 3 sports account for about 15% of my sportscard purchases, 100% of which are licensed products. Classic was still in business the last time I sold an unlicensed card product. You may not like or agree with my opinion BG, but I am consistant.

Who cares? Who cares about ANY of this? You don't like unlicensed product. Others do. Who gives a XXXX.

Read through the thread and my thoughts (randomly related to different points.)

1. I like the fact the Pujols this year looks like Ichiro last season. Others may see it differently but I think it makes for a great "set" for people to build over the years. Each year you extend a set with some of the biggest names, on-card sigs and patches. I wish more sets found ways to extend a brand through different sets/years like the UD APOH 500 club did.

2. I too feel licensing, (like "true rookie cards" for that matter" ) are mattering less and less. It's all about brand equity at this point in time, something that Topps has built up over years, and Leaf is working on building now. IMO the MLBPA is doing itself a disservice in the long run by not providing the licenses because it has forced companies like Panini and Leaf to innovate, and in doing so has diminished the value of the license.

3. I don't care for the pissing matches and generally feel that as a CEO of a company, Brian should know better, but I also understand that he's a passionate card guy who has (IMO) improved on this issue and I'd rather have someone like that here 100x more than not having someone from the companies around. (Now let's see that ***** Leagues set... lol)

I agree with this post in it's entirety.

Much like I do with most of his posts.

Topps may loose the exclusive, but they willl NEVER loose the license (at least in our lifetimes lol). Too much history & quality there. Topps may not be perfect, but they are the best at what they do. Upper Deck was high on my list & I miss their baseball products. I still think they can get back in the market (maybe under different ownership - it is possible to buy an old manufacturer's name & resurrect the brand with class), they made fabulous, innovative cards. Panini reminds me too much of Fleer when they were in business, I would not be excited if they got a MLb license until they show me some innovation. Innovation is deeply lacking in the sportcard industry at present. Too much copying other companies' concepts & living off old laurels IMHO.

Are you saying that the MLB is watered down with players that shouldn't have cards?

It seems that you're saying major league players don't matter here. If so I'd hate to think what you think about MiLB players! But maybe I misread this.

I certainly hope not. Competition is great for everyone concerned.

In an attempt to get this thread back on track, I think it's fair to say that BG probablly values these cards a touch more than many would, and perhaps rightfully so. They are his creation, his product, and his hard earned money and time went in to creating them. Fair enough, I think everyone can agree to that point. However, LEAF sports products have simply not yet been recieved on the open hobby market like fully licensed products as of yet. This in turn does indeed de-value what would most likely be sought after by more if a fully licensed and logo bearing product was offered. This is just common sense. If the same Pujols cards were supplied by Bowman Sterling of the likes, it probablly would be a $800 - $1000 card, but as is the open market is dictating the price (despite what BG would pay for them).

All in all, these were simply an added bonus to an already quality product and to fetch $200 for the /99 and $500 for the /5 patch cards is nice coin, not only for the respective cards at hand but as an added bonus to the product. I just started a Pujols PC (you can see in my sig) and would ABSOLUTELY love to own one if I had the extra coin to pick one up. I would have no reservation about licensing as the cards are simply well done and look great, and it would at this point be the cornerstone of my PC. Anyway, I'm always in for a good debate, but with regards to the issue at hand, I tink most are simply seeing the opposite side of the same coin.

Great product, and great Pujols inserts! Do some think they are a bit undervalued? Sure, do some think not? Yep, but in the end most agree it is a wonderful card despite the value. To that end how can it not be viewed as a sucess?

Agreed 100%. But Topps' losing their market share entirely would be disastrous for the hobby, that's the point I was trying to get across. Far too many collectors collect topps' cards exclusively for the hobby to recover from the loss of Topps. It would kill the hobby.
