Does Cano sign for a number closer to the Yanks offer since he sees them adding complimentary pieces?

Add a bit of Pitching and they are right in the AL East discussion.

I think it pushes Cano but for a different reason. I think he assumed he could wait until the Yanks get desperate and give him what he demands. I think they are showing him that there are other places they can spend their money. I also wonder if the Fielder trade has an impact because it highlights another way the Yanks could theoretically pick up a big name talent (throwing out a name but imagine the Yanks proposed a Texas-style deal to Colorado for Tulowitzki or something similar where it's largely a contract dump). My guess is he signs with NY for around $200 million and it happens in the next couple of weeks. (Of course this is just a gut instinct, nothing to do with any reports or statements from anyone so take it for what it's worth...)

Ellsbury is too old. They should have signed Beltran for 3/$50m instead.

Think he signs who else will give him more? Cano likes the limelight of nyc cant see him in say seatlle even if they offer more.

Wow just read on MLBTR that the Mariners had offered Ellsbury a 9 year deal....guess he didn't want to play for a losing franchise.

Yanks might as well just sign Cano at his terms - it's not like they can't afford Cano even at the first offer price with all the new money the Yankees are getting this year.

Huh? He 6 years younger than Beltran. (Unless you're being sarcastic)

No way would I take Beltran over Ellsbury.

I assume he means for the length of the contract and amount of money that Ellsbury costs.

Will they FINALLY spend money on a high dollar player??

It's been a long time coming IMO. Seems like we have had quite a bit of money, and no big players/contracts with the exception of Felix. I would have thought we would have offered a prospect or two and pay less money.

I think if they sign Cano, others will follow. Good for them for making the effort.

Jacoby's best years are behind him. At best he reproduces what he did in 2013 for 2-3 years, and that isn't a big deal. He played his best in 2013 because he was playing for a contract, and he got his money, so he will relax a bit, and when he relaxes, his numbers will fade into mediocrity.

Bring on JBJ, Xander, Cecchini, Middlebrooks, Swihart, Vasquez, Owens, Ranaudo, Barnes, Light, Webster, Brentz, Workman, Ball, Betts, and Rubby-dub-dubby De La Rosa. There is no shortage of talent in the Boston system. We have nothing to worry about losing Mr. Accident-waiting-to-happen.

Uhhh....you just countered yourself with your second statement. I think he's got 4 very good years left, I have never bought into that playing for a contract bullsh*t. He had a great year because he is talented and finally healthy over a full season and he wanted to win another ring. If he was 'playing for a contract' in 2013 then what was he doing in 2011? He went to the Yankees because he wanted to win, otherwise he would be in Seattle because apparently they offered him a 9 year deal.

With that said, I'm with you....I also can not wait for all of our young talent to make it to Boston. This is arguably the best farm system we have ever had. Thankfully we have a great GM who recognizes how valuable they are and want them to stay in our system. The future looks bright for our team. :)

Didn't intend a contradiction.

Don't be naive about his playing for a contract. How much would his contract have been if he had had a bad year in 2013?

The Yanks got yanked.

the Yanks got Yanked? They paid 153 million and only seven years for someone who will be 37 at the end of the deal. How is that getting yanked? Thats market value but maybe a tad higher. I think you are underestimating the combo of Gardner and Ells at the top of that lineup. 120 steals easy I think.

Plus, Ellsbury's injuries were freak accidents. Broken ribs and a non throwing arm/shoulder injury I believe. Its not like he had surgery on his knees, legs, or throwing arm.

This was a market level deal and he even accepted LESS to go to a winning ball club.

The sox do have an impressive farm system but to say that this deal is bad is ignorant.
