Well, it looks like Betances is going to make the Yankees bullpen as a potentially high leverage innings reliever. At 26 yrs old in two weeks. Prospect Auto: 2007

Not saying he's a prospect anymore, but there is some room for his stuff to bounce back to respectable levels, especially if he somehow turns into the Joba type beast this year.

Interesting that he hasn't moved up in price at all especially with his performance so far this spring. If there were talk about him in any role other than reliever I think he would have already spikes a bit. Though as it is, he remains a $2-4 auto.

I still have a 2004 BCDP GOld #/50 autograph that I wish I never bought in 2005.
It pains me to think what I spent on it. :-x

Generally it feels like anything greater than 7 years old is just taking up space. Some interesting notes, though:

Chris Davis and Carlos Gomez first chrome cards were in '06. (Chris Parmelee is still with the Twins. Any believers? :))

Also, I remember Lance Berkman chromes taking a good jump back in '11 when he was in St. Louis (although that likely doesn't fit this case considering he had a good playing history already).

What about '01 TC or '03 BDP Edwin Encarnacion chromes?

I think with Yankees and a guy like this, it'll all hinge on the NY papers spurring interest in the non-prospecting fan base. With a lot of the examples people have posed, it's about national or large regional attention that catalyzes price bumps on the older prospects. Basically, prospectors are done with the guy but then BAM the average fan wants a piece. How many prospect collectors could be possible for driving up McGwire or Chris Davis cards?

It is hard to say how long to hold on... sometimes a card can be a common for 7,8,9 years then blow up (Chris Davis 2006BDP didn't hit til 2013, and 1999 Josh Hamilton cards didn't go back up until 2008.

But this is really rare, and holding on to boxes of base cards for a decade waiting for someone to hit is pretty silly. That being said, I do it.

If I'm not sure on someone, I look them up on baseball-reference and if they are out of pro ball... that says it all.

At some they should definitely leave your "prospecting box," but team collectors will always be interested in getting them to some extent. On that note, I would be interested in buying a lot of failed ranger bowman chrome autos if you have them. Let me know!

All this is why I dont prospect

+1

Are you all trying to tell me that my 1991 Upper Deck Top Prospect cards aren't going to become worth something?

It is truly up to the individual. A team collector may value that $8.00 Auto and never let it go. In general, if you're looking at just value it seams a semi consensus that 2006 and before should be let go about now with the exception of some possible pitchers.

06 and 07 my Rasmus, beavan Lotzkar stashes did wonders.

I made a killing on Rasmus. If your a prospector why would you still have those?

But no Patterson, Pie, or Harvey?

I was never a prospector but I did buy a few extra Pattersons and Keltons just in case. I sold the Pattersons as a loss and the Kelton is being used as a coaster in my card room as we speak! Wanna buy it........cheap? The case has a few coffee stains but they can easily be cleaned off! LOL

His example is SPOT on because McGwire's rookie was in 1985 Topps, as a member of Team USA. It was worthless at first... until he lit it up in the late 80's in the majors, with Canseco. It then skyrocketed in value... it was never expensive before that. So, in that example, he's got about 4 years distance from release of the rookie to a higher price, which translates to about 2009 in terms of the topic at hand.

I happen to have some old Beckett's laying around to check the McGwire prices....

June 1987 = $0.60
January 1988 = $20
January 1989 = $18
December 1989 = $18
December 1990 = $20
January 1993 = $30
October 1993 = $22
December 1994 = $10
December 1995 = $10
December 1996 = $18

I'm not sure when these Beckett's were originally released, but as McGwire hit 15 HR in the month of May in 1987, as a rookie, I'd have expected to see something other than sixty cents on his listing.
