I sold an item on eBay and tracking says that the item was delivered. I received a message from the buyer yesterday saying it wasn't received and that they were having their post office look into it. I message back saying to let me know what the post office comes up with and today they file an item not received claim. Do they have a case? Can I take any other measures to protect myself. This is a low feedback bidder and I personally believe this to be an attempt at a scam.

Personally they have a case with usps but not with you. Ebay will recognize that it is stated and tracked as delivered. The sucky part about it is that I have had a lot of packages marked as delivered by the post office only to finally show up days later. They might be telling the truth but on your end as the seller, it was delivered. They have to file a complaint with the post office.

That's a tough one. I've had this happen to me as a buyer just about a month ago. I bought a $33 card and delivery confirmation said it was delivered but it never was. I simply ate the cost and didn't bother messaging the seller as I felt there really wasn't an argument since the system said otherwise. I'm interested to hear your outcome.

When ever I don't have my regular mail person, all my stuff says delivered one day and shows up the next. Almost a give for me.

And I had the same happen to me but for me it was not in the system for like 5 days and then it should up as delivered after the buyer opened a claim 4 days after he paid for it. And then eventually he dropped the case when he got the card the next day.
Damn PO sometimes

I would call the Post Office myself. They'll try to find it and he may be lying. They can tell if it was delivered or not.

If the card is more than $200, you need to have sent it with signature confirmation. Was that done?

If the card is less than $200, then you should be fine.

You guys ought to keep in mind not everyone lies. I know we have different delivery people all the time. They are so bad sometimes I may get a bunch of cards in bubble mailers and they automatically assume all the bubble mailers are mine so I get like three or four other bubble mailers from different houses all along the street. I have to be extra careful to look and make sure the mail is mine because it happens so often.

From my experience with eBay, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY as the seller make sure the buyer gets it!!!!!!

Now, even though you don't actually deliver the mail, it's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure mail people do their job. If one of them fails to scan a package, that's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!

Ok, so you may be wondering: what if everything goes smoothly with the mail BUT the buyer gets a paper cut while opening the bubble forcing him to drop card?

When the card hits the shag carpet, it busts out of the taped shut team bag, ricochets off the wall, out a closed window and lands in dog crap but not before the card comes out of the loader!

Well, from my years of using eBay, I've learned that it's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure none of that could happen in advance!!!!!

Lastly, from my years of using eBay I have found that it's MY RESPONSIBLITY to say "go XXXX yourself eBay" and have enjoyed no longer using that site.

This has been starting to worry me recently. My mail carrier has been mixing up my mail with my neighbors. Just today I had 4 pieces of the lady next door's mail in my box. I know its just a matter of time before it will be a card that shows delivered, but to the wrong person. Not much you can do about it.

Wasn't saying buyer was lying 100%, but as a seller I would want to know for sure and call PO as soon as the buyer said it wasn't received.

No you are jumping off of the deep end again BBC.
Know eBays rules and play by them, if you dont you will get XXXXed.
Its not that hard of a concept really. Under $200, you are OK with DC if it shows as delivered. However, no matter what, taking your entire scenario into consideration, or any other scenario for that matter, if you want to protect yourself from a claim, you better purchase insurance, the USPS is up front about it, eBay is up front about it, paypa is up front about it. Not sure why you cant put two and two together with this, this is not something new with eBay or the USPS or paypal. You effed up in your post from a couple of weeks ago, you didnt protect yourself, so you got burned, that is your fault, not the buyers. It has been beaten to death on FCB and every other card forum on the planet, you want to protect yourself with a claim within eBay using the USPS, you better use insurance, otherwise get ready to bend over and take it hard up the kiester.

Disclaimer: Yes I know not every instance will be covered by insurance, but you know what, if you dont purchase insurance, you never EVER have a foot to start off standing on.

Thanks for everyone's input so far. The item was $60 so no need for signature. Do I need to take any action in regards to the claim opened?

This has me intrigued. Curious how the PO will know for certain if it was delivered or not.

They'll ask the carrier. Sometimes they get scanned at the office by mistake. Carriers have pretty good memories and usually remember people that get similar packages often.

Also, if I were the buyer and this happened, if the seller said he'd contact the Post Office to check into it, that would show me he was concerned and trying to remedy the situation.

This happened to me when I purchased a Harper A&G RC auto redemption. I got screwed. If you shipped through eBay, then they'll have to take it up with the PO. My PO did absolutely nothing, to help me.

You need to note that tracking shows it was delivered, in the dispute.

As an aside, insurance would do absolutely nothing for anyone since it shows delivered. My Harper was insured for my $200 purchase price. Since no sig requires, USPS went by scanned tracking and denied my claim.

Well at least it's your next door neighbor's. I'm getting stuff from the same street but all up and down spanning several blocks. It's like they see a bubble mailer and figure it's mine. I may get 12 bubble mailers at a time and still have to check every one.

I getcha. Problem is, I've been told by the carrier that they scan everything at the truck and then begin their delivery. So my packages may show delivered. But they are scanned quite a ways from the mailbox. Sometimes I get lucky and get them back when the guy realizes his mistake or a person comes and drops it off because it's not theirs. Other times I get them two days after the show delivered(guessing they got scanned at the PO). Sometimes they never show up. Sad thing is 85% of what I buy is $50 or less so it's not always insured or confirmed. Luckily some sellers go that extra mile and try to provide the service anyways.

My mom was a carrier for 20 years, so I know what they should do. They are supposed to scan it as they hand it to you or put it in box. Some scan at the office in the morning and some scan on the truck. And some actually scan it when they are supposed to. You would think it wouldn't matter about saving time since you scan them all anyway, but to save time some will scan all packages at once. Rather than pull out scanner every other house. Sometimes when it is scanned at the office (should be scanned departing and leaving each office, and out for delivery, then delivered) someone hits the wrong button and has it show as delivered. Everyone does it a little different but the end result is usually the same. FedEx has the best system I've used.

Well that was interesting. I just escalated the case with paypal so that they could resolve it and now minutes later it appears as though the dispute was cancelled and the temporary hold placed those funds has ended. I don't think paypal would have dealt with it that fast. So, I'm guessing the buyer saw the escalation, realized he couldn't get me to automatically refund and cancelled it?
