Topps Tek officially is back.

After several years on the bench, a brand that was ahead of its time back from 1998-2000 is back as Topps officially revealed the basics on the product it had teased at the recent Industry Summit.

This time around, though, it’s 2014 Topps High Tek and it includes autographs as well as buybacks and new cards with the complicated acetate aesthetic that some collectors have come to love over the years.

It will include just eight cards per pack/box — six base cards one parallel limited to 99 or fewer copies and one autograph — when it arrives on Nov. 5. There will be 12 packs per case with each case guaranteeing a buyback autograph or a “re-created design Diffractor.”

High Tek will be a hobby-only release with up to 12 different parallels — background patterns — per card. The base set will consist of 100 cards with nine other parallels per card. While serial-numbering was not announced for most versions, their names were. Collectors can look for Gold Diffractors, Ice Diffractors, Disco Diffractors, Clouds Diffractors, Black and White image parallels (/15), Red Storm Diffractors (/10), Blue Dots Diffractors (/5) and 1/1 Charcoal Galactic Diffractors and printing proofs.

The autographs will all be signed on-card with Disco, Clouds, Black and White, Red Storm, Blue Dots, Charcoal Galactic and printing proof versions. The quantities were not announced for Disco and Clouds, while the others will match their base cards.

Autographed buybacks also will be among the offerings with original cards from the previous three-year run among those to be found. A preliminary checklist was not released.

Among the insert cards in this one will be 1999 Teknicians Diffractors for 25 players in the past style with 10 of those players signing parallels limited to just 10. Also to be had are 2000 TEKtonics Diffractors Xalso with signed parallels as well as Low Tek Diffractors, Those auto parallels will be limited to 15 copies.

So reading it again, did topps change the format from when it was first announced?

So it's one mini box and inside is several cards, no packs.

Edit: obviously topps can change it but here's what they said in March:

The setup is more like the Finest configuration with three mini boxes,” Luraschi said. “To be able to offer three autographs at that price point is extremely strong.”

Or maybe we assumed it would be $40-$50 a mini with several packs in each.

If it is ONE pack for $40-$50, ugh.

The more I re read it, the more let down I get.

So there's "up to 12 different background designs".....

Isn't that NOT what Tek is all about? Shouldn't it be a ton more?

Yeah it's confusing. Is it 12 different backgrounds with 9 parallels of each background though?

Yeah, I'm thinking the price point versus what you get isn't going to be worth it. A set like this is something you either want to do as a whole or at least for your team or player. Yes the autos are a nice touch but this set is geared towards a certain type of collector. With their configuration, they just alienated that type of collector. 8 freaking cards? The set used to be dang near impossible anyways. Now it's definitely impossible. I'll buy some singles but I'll buy no wax. At 8 cards, it's not worth it.

Hell, they'd be better off charging $150 a box and in the box you get one whole set of a particular pattern, one auto, and 5-10 parallels of the same pattern the sets for. Even then it would still be a challenge. But I like bang for my buck. Not 8 cards for $40-$50.

Sounds like a disaster. What a noisy release this is going to be. I am praying Albert Belle isn't in this. Please please please...

Eight cards per box with one auto sounds like one of Topps' online exclusive deals. I don't mean that in a good way.

This doesn't even sound like Tek. At all. Should be like 1998 release. Have a limited number of guys and a lot of patterns or something. Redemptions? Buy backs? Autos? Forget it

I think the cards look great, but the nice thing about the original TEK was you got a lot of cards per box, and unlike other product, collectors actually valued the base cards. I would have gladly sacrificed the autos in the 2014 product if it meant a full box of cards. Mini Boxes are depressing, and obviously TEK won't be available in blasters. I'm disappointed, because just on card design, I would have been busting a Topps product for the first time in years.

Holding out final judgement until the MSRP is announced, but unless it is $12 for a pack/box I won't be buying. Was really looking forward to this, but not anymore. You have to wonder if Topps ever actually talks to any collectors before making these decisions.

So, let me break this down, because whoever wrote it was obviously not a believer that clarity should be an important part of writing.

"High Tek will be a hobby-only release with up to 12 different parallels — background patterns — per card." This would be the part of Tek most people like, a bunch of variations on the same card. So people can chase 12 copies per guy.

"The base set will consist of 100 cards with nine other parallels per card."
1) Gold Diffractors
2) Ice Diffractors
3) Disco Diffractors
4) Clouds Diffractors
5) Black and White image parallels (/15)
6) Red Storm Diffractors (/10)
7) Blue Dots Diffractors (/5)
8) 1/1 Charcoal Galactic Diffractors
9) Printing proofs.
This would be the diffractor or gold parallels that people like, taken to an extreme. It's not clear if each of the 12 patterns gets 9 variations, or if "other" indicates it's just the one. I'm assuming it's like the 1999 Golds with the full set of parallels for each pattern. That leads to 120 possible versions of each player in the set. But with at least 12 if not 24 1/1 versions (I'm guessing Printing proofs are 1/1), master rainbows will be quite rare.

Either way, I think they really screwed this up. Autographs are not the selling point of this product, the basic cards are. If they had just taken 1999 Tek and updated the checklist, and maybe added a few more rare parallels, and kept prices down to $50-75 or whatever for a regular 20-24 pack box with 6-10 cards per, people would go crazy ripping box after box trying to complete player runs and sets. But to limit the base cards to 72 per case really makes it unnecessarily hard to track down even base cards, and the autographs I'm sure will make it a lot more expensive and limited than it had to be.
