The main take away from this is don't piss off your customers!

It's really really easy to understand.

Obviously, you can never please everyone but don't do extremely dumb things!

Speaking of which (and in reality it's not "that" important because of the extreme scarcity, but still), why would topps set themselves up by labeling bowman chrome boxes with "2 CHROME autographs every box" considering that the "bowman black autos" aren't chrome?

Technically, unless the black is a bonus auto, a collector could have a gripe saying they only got ONE chrome auto.

Nitpicking? I guess, but if you're topps, why set yourself up for this?

I dont think Topps is pissing off its customers, at least from the takeaway in the context you are saying it with the Kris Bryant card, because Topps does not perceive buyers on the secondary market as customers. Now if all the people buying cases such as the distributors and card shops were complaining, my guess is that Topps would listen more closely, or if a large number of box busters were constantly calling them/emailing them about getting a Kris Bryant AUTO in their box that......I am guessing that would never happen though, because almost everyone would be 100% satisfied pulling any Kris Bryant as that would more than pay for the box!!!

I do believe the Bowman Black AUTOs are "Extra" hits and the box should still deliver the said (2) Chrome AUTOs, but you would need to check with AIC or Jaypers on that...

If Topps used to worry about the secondary market, they will tell you now they do not. Nothing they do is for the collector, they are focused on products their dealers can move...

However, and I've made this argument before, Topps' replacement program completely invalidates any claim they make about "not caring" or "not using" secondary market values. If you've had 1 card replaced, then you know that they go right to Beckett and assign a value and a "of-equal-value" card to your redemption card.

Well, for the sake of replacements Topps needs to use something standard for values. I wouldnt want them coming up with a value based on a per card production rate...

Confirmed. As are the AFLAC/PG/UA autos.

I think they're being dishonest.

If their product ceases to have secondary market value, they cease to have a company.

Right?

They claim they don't care about "value" at all though. It's about cost at Topps, then profit gained from shipping to distributers, then moving on to the next item of business.

If they were honest or consistant about secondary market value, then they would A) never say it doesn't affect them, or B) hand out replacements based on odds, not "value". If they didn't recognize secondary value, then they should care less that they swap some Bryce Harper auto for a Carlos Peguero auto, because they claim after-market value is of no concern to them.

If only MLB would see this, remember they are the only game in town (logos) and many many collectors only want logos.

I can't reconcile Topps saying they don't care, or are unaware, about secondary market value, especially with a product like Bowman. The card maker/dealer relationship is codependent, and you can't make too many DOA products before either the dealers stop ordering them or go out of business. While their official line is to deny the impact of secondary values on their products, it's quite obvious they are acutely aware. They know that rookie cards are a big part of sales, so big that they've created number product lines based on them. And they know that some people like gambling, so they have the $100 packs with 4 cards. And they know some people like building sets, so they have products designed for them. While they print on the packs that they can't guarantee future values, that's strictly legalese. You don't put Kris Bryant on the box and load them up with ersatz rookie cards if you aren't aware his cards are among the highest sellers of the year, and you don't label your product "Home of the Rookie Card" if you didn't know that your likely customer is a prospector who wants to resell that card for a profit sooner or later. Topps' twitter feed isn't full of pics of base cards, it's for pics of the latest hottest prospect signing his cards.

For information's sake, I opened 12 cases, hit (2) aflacs/UA and (1) Bowman black autograph. In each situation it TOOK THE PLACE of a chrome autograph. Just thought I would put it out there......
